    Greetings all,

As we stay put in NC for the winter and making plans to head north of the Chesapeake in the spring.  We would be interested in any recommendations on cruising guides for New England.

    Thank you,

    Jeff & Wendy

So would we.  We are planning to take Bloodhound to a new permanent home on Prince Edward Island in Spring of 2013.  The trip is from Galveston, TX to Charlottetown, P.E.I. via Canso Pass in Nova Scotia.  Using the ICWW is not attractive so we're looking at hops up the coast.  Cruising guides for that long stretch are going to be needed.  Can anyone point us in the right direction?

The Cruising Guide to the New England Coast by Duncan & Ware covers waters from Hudson River to New Brunswick and the St John's River. It's been around forever, more of an "old style" guide, light on photos and shoreside facilities/phone #'s, but fairly comprehensive with well written descriptions and essential details of most harbors and anchorages and passages. Often a good read including history and points of interest. Most recent publcation may be about 10 years old, but used copies can be found for cheap on Amazon.

If you need charts and are getting the maptech chart-kit, they have a decent (not quite as detailed), but more up-to-date guide with aerial photos marina/facilities and phone #'s called Embassy Guide--covers Block Is to Grand Manon. Landfall Navigation sells it at a discount with the chart kit.

If you're planning to spend time exploring the Maine coast, the Taft's cruising guide looks very nice. I had it from the library once and I thought it was comprehnsive and very well put together.

New England is my old cruising grounds, although it's been many years. Maybe someone who has been there more recently with a guide book will have an opinion. Dick?
