Westsail 33

    Hi folks.

    There are a couple of (what are advertised) as "Westsail 33" in Aussie at the moment.  Search on http://yachthub.com/ to see them.

    At first I just assumed that they were advertised wrongly but one of them (Passage West) was apparently built by a boatyard called "Westsail Boats, Fremantle" in 1982.  Fremantle is in West Australia or at least that's the only Fremantle I can find on the 'net..

    Does anyone know if Westails were built in Aussie at any stage and if so, any history of the boatyard, build information etc?

    A few people have asked me about the 33' boats advertised as Westsails built in Australia.  I checked with Snider Vick, Westsail's original owner, and he told me he did not give anyone permission to use the name Westsail on boats built by anyone except the original company.  I was not able to contact Hans Weerman, who took over and ran Westsail International after the bankruptcy in 1977.  He may have given that yard permission.

    I believe that these boats are copied from the Atkins lines, and I heard that many were completed as fishing boats as well as sailboats.  I do not know what the layup was, or the quality of the finish.  I have seen some pictures, but could not tell how well they are built.

    I personally would not call them Westsails, and when one owner wanted to advertise his 33' boat for sale on my Westsail website, I declined his request.

    did westsail ever had a designof a 33 with 2 masts?

    I would love to know more about it cause i m interested in buying it!

    Please i would appreciate any info.....and if one day you ll come down to Margaret river i ll

    take you for a wine tour!

    From what Bud said, there were never any Westsails built under licence in Australia.

    From my point of view, I've made two attempts to contact the owners to ask for more detail about the boat with no luck at all.  I find that very surprising given last time I looked, they had 3 adverts on Yacht Hub for the boat, all with different descriptions. 

    The fact that they seem pretty keen to sell but don't respond to any questions about the boats heritage or any technical questions about layup etc, would make anyone suspicious.

    If you want my advice, I would suggest you look at the boat with a fresh eye as a 33ft, full-keel, double-ended ketch and ignore the fact that it's advertised as a Westsail.  You should definitely not rely on the Westsail reputation if you're thinking of buying it as it looks like it was not built by Westsail and it was not built under licence from Westsail either.

    Thanks for the wine tour offer :-)  But the last tour I went on caused significant memory loss (I think) and I'm getting too old to lose chunks of my life :-)

    Hi all

    I’m wondering if anyone has learned anything about these boats in the two years since anyone has posted here.

    Yes, I’ve found advertising descriptions to vary wildly, feel my questions about heritage are dodged and I am quite suspicious...

    I’m very new and the boats in question are about 4,000km away. I’m struggling for guidance as far as getting someone knowledgeable to ring brokers/owners on my behalf (let alone inspect them in the flesh) and I haven’t a clue where to start really!

    At the absolute best I’ve got 50k to spend.

    For what it is worth, Lehg II had two masts and LOA of 31'4".  A Colin Archer design, it is very similar to W32's. As noted earlier, the basic design was used in various sizes and setups. Vito Dumas was the sailor.  Also, pull up info on Robin Know-Johnson's Suhaili. I believe it was somewhat larger - and did have two masts. The same basic design. The plans are all over the internet and could be easily employed by a builder. One thing I have found in the ownership of sailboats, is that builders sometimes use 'in house' design teams where they almost duplicate a design, but don't - and it is royalty free. Anyway, ..

    Thanks Peter, but if that was directed at me, perhaps I should have been clearer, one mast is fine (I THINK preferable actually). Two masts was the other guy from two years ago. I should have deleted the word "ketch" at the top of my post, sorry!

    Will check them out all the same...
