I have some rot in my laminated bowsprit and I will need to pull it in order to repair. Since I have to remove it anyway, I've dreamt of changing the arrangement to a running bowsprit. This would be advantageous in a number of ways, maintainability, storage fees, etc.

This would involve replacing the forestay chainplate and adjusting the current location of sampson posts and windlass.

Any thoughts or warnings on this idea?

Not really that much work to rig. Slide sprit forward, secure heel rope, tighten and cleat off shrouds and bobstay.

Plus it erases six feet that marinas can charge you for.

Not trying to argue, just don't see where the nightmare comes in.

There are  advantages and disadvantages for everything. On long ocean cruises, I was fascinated watching the striped perch underneath the bowsprit keeping up with the boat. If the bowsprit bothers you get a boat that is full length, so you do not have to deal with the  extension. Besides, a removable bowsprit has its own drawbacks. I liked the full length boat over a Colin Archer style, but at the time that was the most boat available at the price. My recommendation, anchor out, enjoy what you have, and if you don't like that wooden extension on both ends of the hull, do what I have done.  I designed an "A" frame to replace the bowsprit and a wide trapezoid frame for the boomkin,. it is not heavy- I carried both separately down to he boat and attached them. myself.
