    Here in the Florida Keys, we must have a diver clean the bottom once every 30 days.  Especially the props.  Barnacles love the bare metal on props.

    18 months ago (the last time we were on the hard) I sprayed my clean prop with Never Wet.  I didn't have much hope for it.  I thought it would wear off quickly.  It didn't.

    Now after 18 months, the diver told me he never saw such a clean propeller before. Not a single barnacle or bit of slime. He wanted to know what I did to it.

    I bought Rustoleum Never Wet at Home Depot for only $16.  They call it a "super hydrophobic"coating.  It is very much unlike anything I've seen in the past.

    Next time we are on the hard (next summer), I'm going to use it on a test patch on my hull.  If it works well, it is very much cheaper than toxic bottom paints.  I'll post here two years from now about how it worked out.

    A friend is also testing Never Wet inside his boat.  He had been using ever more toxic chemicals to try and prevent growth of mildew, and none of them worked.   We reason that Never Wet not only repels water, it should repel moisture and thus prevent mildew or mold from growing.  I'll report back on that experiment in a year.

    that is great... I need to haul this year (it has been at least 7 years).

    I will try it too!

    Dick: Thanks for the product test -- I'll try it out soon... I used a hard wax and heat to treat the prop.  Maybe try an area on the rudder as a test patch... easy to see - at least on my boat.

    Wonder if it is slippery under foot? How about on Stainless steel?

    Hi Jay,

    It makes a trasnparend but dull surface, not slippery.

    for stainless, i don't think you want any coating that isolates it from the air.

    When they came out with the 'outdoor furniture' version I contemplated using NeverWet on my aging dodger's Sunbrella.  Until I read this;

    Here is a review of the original version;

    I appreciate skepticism as much as any sailor.   But if not the never wet, what theory do we have that kept my prop clean for 18 months?

    Now, only a week after the diver cleaned the bottom, I have new barnacles and slime everywhere under water except on the prop.  It the reason is not the Never Wet, then what?

    My only explanation would be there are multiple 'flavors' of NeverWet... spray on outdoor fabric spray, boot and shoe sealer, 2 step multisurface/multipurpose, indoor/outdoor, in different colors, etc. (see Amazon).  Based on the reviews I've read it appears some work better than others and each one works better on some things than others.

    Having no other explanation it appears the NeverWet stars aligned for you.  Which of the different NeverWet's did you use?

    Not sure how relevant my experience has been but for what it is worth, I tried never wet on my leaky dodger and not only did it not work but it left a white film on the sunbrella. Also I didn't treat my prop before I went cruising this summer and even though it was a short time compared to Dick's 18 months, had expected some barnacles on my prop. Surprisingly, it came back clean as a whistle too, probably because I was constantly moving. All the same, for just $16, it is pretty good insurance. My 2 cents. Peter

    Dick:  How about a product test... I suspect you have some never wet left over... try treating 1/2 of a piece suitable material and hanging it in the water for a week or 2 -- take pic's every day / before and after etc... Lets see what happens.

     Mike,  it was the two part version that I used.

    Jay,  good idea about a Practicsl Sailor type product test.  I'll see what I can do.
