Afternoon guys I am looking for some advice.  I own an Aussie WS 33 "Sandshoe"  I am in the process of having the entire standing rigging, Inc the spreaders, replaced due to storm damage by the previous owner.

I have a couple of issues / questions that I would hugely appreciate any advice or experience.

1st up the boom height is too low - I am 5'10" and it sits squarely about chin height when I am stood in the cockpit! Has anyone had this issue or had involvement with raising the goose neck?

2nd the boom is hugely long almost right back to the pushpit - I have heard of other owners cutting up to 24 inches off the length of their boom - again any advice experience with this?

I understand that both these modifications will reduce sail area - once again I have read that this will infect help with weather helm?

    Thanks for your time,

    Jay

Please don't take this the wrong way , but your 33 was not built by the Westsail Corp. , I'm sure it is a very fine boat . If I were you I would contact , our own Bud.  http://www.westsail.com/ or we have a thing you can click on , it's called, ask Bud . back in the day he ran Westsail factory , his co. now is worldcruiseryachtco.com

Please stay with us and let us know how things turn out , and I would like to see some pics.

    Happy New Year !

I am fully aware that my Westsail 33 is not an American built WS.  But it is still a Westsail!  It was factory built in Western Australia in the 80's

There isn't much info to be found about these aussie boats there were only around 70 built before the company was closed.

I will contact Bud for advice as I have in the past.

    Cheers

Does the boom have the old style downhaul? Mine was like that so we converted to a newer style boomvang and raised the gooseneck making it higher. Bud sells a boomvang / preventer.

The boom can be cut to make it shorter but depends on the main sail size.

i have two websites. One is www.westsail.com and the other is www.westsailparts.com

I do not have one with Worldcruiser in it.  As a matter of fact, I am using Westsail Parts Company almost all the time, instead of  Worldcruiser Yacht Company  I started that back in the 1970's when I was custom building boats. Since I am now mainly selling parts, I set up the name of Westsail Parts Company as my main entity.
