Westsail 32 Factory Build Manual

    New on WestsailParts.com !!

Just added to Bud's WestsailParts.com Website is my enhanced version of the Westsail 32 Factory Build Manual. Not possessing an original copy of the manual, I began with the scan of a manual created by Bill and Jane Shaw, from the manual that came with sv Galena, a 1975 W32 #511. (See: http://www.sv-galena.com/WOM/).

Like all the Build Manuals shipped with new boats, Bill's was a Xerox copy of the type-written original. After years of use and life aboard a boat, it was impossible for Bill to create perfect scans. But starting with his originals, I invested some time with Photoshop, enhancing the images as best I could. I then converted the manual to a web application.

As I began to break the manual into sections, it occurred to me that many of the pages were out of sequence (as Bill had warned). My version of the manual had been set up using the assumed page numbers, with Table of Contents and Index created therefrom. Having already invested almost 200 hours in optimazing the scans and building the associated web app, I figure it makes little sense to attempt a reorginization now. However, while this version of the manual consisted of 465 pages, Bud is sending me a later version containing 625 pages. I'll try to make some time to scan and optimize this newer version over the next couple of months while cruising in the Bahamas. If so, I'll post an update upon my return. In the interim, the current version is online for all to view.

I thank Bill for his original contribution and offer this webpage as the result of our combined efforts. I hope you find the manual as helpful as I did, while Drifter was on the hard for a two-year refit (that I expected to take two months ;-)

Please note that the web application was originally written for my personal use, which I run from a localized web server on my laptop, rather than accross an Internet connection. It runs very efficiently in this manor, but is a very large application to be run over the Internet.  It loads 466 full-page images, plus a Table of Contents and Index... all on a single web page. Once loaded, it is very efficient. But, unless you have a good connection to the Internet, it might take some time to load all the files.

Once I've scanned the new version of the manual, I'll break it into sections, much as I did the Westsail Service Manual. This will provide shorter load times, even with a slow connection. I will also provide a means by which you can view thumbnails of the pages and select sections and/or pages to view that way.

Don't miss this new addition to the Westsail Parts Company website!

Another great job, Jack!  Thank you so much.  Since many of the parts for the W28 are interchangeable with the W32, even us little guys will benefit greatly from your work.

    Thanks, guys.

Bud has his later version of the manual on its way to me, so I can work on it in the Bahamas (when I get bored ;-)  I should have thought to have him mail me the manuals for the other models as well. If anyone has scanned copies of the W28, W42, W43, etc, then I can do those as well.

Now that I have the code written for the core web app, I can use it to recreate manuals the additional models as well (provided the scans are reasonably good). It will still take some work to put them together, but at least the web code will cross over.

At present, most of Bud's manuals are still in print format. If you've loaded the whole manual, you may have noticed that it should print out in its entirety with proper page breaks. I can also create a PDF version for download.

Does anyone have (or want to do) these scans of the other models?

    Jack,

I have the digital version of the W28 manual which I got from Bud.  It would be great to have it all gussied up like you did with the W32 manual.  It's a 365 page, 416.8 MB PDF file.  I'd be happy to send you a copy.

The reason that the W32 factory construction manual I just sent to Jack has 625 pages is that is a compilation of one of the first editions of the manual, and one of the last editions.  It has many pages of construction details that were not included in the later manuals.

Since I had to only original copy, and although I have made a few copies for owners that asked me for a printed copy, and that Jack will only work with computer files, I took him up on his offer to scan in the entire 625 pages and make it available to all of the Westsail lovers by accessing my new website. (whew, what a long sentence)

Once again, Jack does everyone a favor.

There is no way I can thank Bud and all those like Jack that contribute to the Westsail community enough.

It not only makes owning a Westsail much less 'stress-free' but makes me feel like part of a family.
