Engine removal with the boom?

    Hello all!

    I need to remove the MD11C in my W32. I would like to do the removal and install using the boom while the boat is in the water. Does anyone have some pictures or pointers on doing this? My "new" engine is a Yanmar 3JH3E.

    Please see this post for some photos of it.  Sorry for the extra clutter on the page but I'm sure you'll get the picture: 

    Make sure that the boom is solidly on the boomkin and lash it in place (to hold it down) then take your main halyard and attack it to the boom at the point you'll be attaching the chain hoist.  Tension the main halyard so that extra support is provided for the boom at the point the weight will be put on it. 

    To attach the hoist put several wraps around the boom at the main halyard point.  Attack the chain hoist to the wraps and at that point you're pretty much all set.  In the photos above the wraps around the boom were pretty crappy because they were just wraps with a bowline connecting both ends.  However, since those photos were taken I've done it again and I used a Portuguese bowline to make the boom wraps.  A far superior design as it distributes the weight.

    Thanks for the info. I will also be swinging the motor out and onto the dock. It might be a month or two but I am trying to get this figured out before I have to actually do it. I briefly looked at the link. I'll be spending some more time on your site!

    Anyone else have any pictures or comments?

    When you (eventually) swing the engine out to the dock with your boom, just think about the stress on your gooseneck and topping lift/fittings.  Check the topping lift fitting at the masthead.  I would also add the support of a spare halyard (=maybe even two of them) to your boom end during your swing-out.

    Our W32 has the 3JH4E we are quite pleased with it.
