Can you mount a brass seacock without drilling bolt holes through the hull?

If you install a thick (3/4" to 1") backing plate on the inside of the hull you can run short lag bolts into the backing plate without penetrating the hull.  I glue the backing plate to the hull with 5200.

    David,

In your post, you made reference to "mounting a brass seacock". That reference to "brass" was most likely unintentional, but I thought I would mention it, on the off chance that it was not.  (I doubt that anyone even makes a true seacock in brass.

Owners frequently use the term "seacock" to refer to any thru-hull fitting, including common household "gate valves", made of any material, though typically brass.  I'm hoping you do know the difference between a true seacock and any other valve, as well as the importance of using bronze and not brass.

If this was simply an oversight, please forgive the observation. If it was not, please investigate the difference, before making the mistake. As a relatively new Westsailor, I thought it was worth the mention.

Thanks for all the info guys.

I appreciate the help.  Jack, the seacock is bronze, not brass. My bad, but thanks for looking out for me, I appreciate it being a novice.  This is a bronze 1" Buck Algonquin flanged seacock with bronze thru-hull.

Tate, thanks for the links - they were very helpful.

Kevin, I will be using a backing plate - I plan on glassing it to the hull.  This is my first thru-hull and needless to say, I'm a little nervous about the whole job.

Thanks again for your experience and help.
