    Hello everyone,

Just bought a W32 here at the easternmost end of the Mediterranean. Bought it a couple days back here with the intention of motoring it about 300 nm east to here where i currently live.

My intention was to take it on hard in the fisherman's wharf near where i live and do a major refit/restoration on it on my own time. I thought it should take a year or two to make it the capable blue water boat it was designed to be.

Second day on my journey from where i bought the boat some debris of some kind got stuck between the propeller and the rudder and both seized the engine and broke the rudder.

I got myself towed back to the nearest marina here and at the moment sitting on hard with a broken engine and a broken rudder, considering the options of truck hauling the boat to the destination and start from there.

Anyhow, for the purpose of this post, this is sufficient. So hello everyone.

I am by the way recording each and every step of the journey so far and planning to share it with you fellow owners in the near future.

I am guessing i will benefit a lot from the collective wisdom of this group. So get ready for my questions folks.

Boat Name is CANKIZ (pronounced somewhere between John-kiss and Junk-as)

    Bora:

Thanks so much for joining the WOA and posting on the forum-- all the way from Turkey...

Sorry to hear that your first journey in your new to you Westsail 32 ended with being towed - we would be interested in hearing what you picked up that caused so much damage.

Hopefully, the damage will be easy to repair...

Trucking may work out well for you and give you time to get to know the boat and get things working well...

    Fair winds

the rudder pictures are as below. currently i am on the hard in the marina and will haul the boat to the destination in a couple days.

this is just to show you the current situation. An extensive report on engine and rudder will take some time.

    Bora:

Looking at the rudder -- looks like the rudder shells came loose and expanded?

Is that foam I see coming out of the cracks?

I just advised another Westsail 32 owner on building a new rudder, with the same method as building a surfboard.  Contact me at bud@westsail.com and I can describe it to you.

Hello Bora,  Sorry about your problem.  The pictures are not “all telling”, but I don’t see a real problem with a repair.  The rudder was built in 2 halves and the seam has been split.  Any experienced fiber glasser should not have a problem fixing it within 3 labor days.  A more difficult repair may be at the forward edge, that is not visible in the pictures.  That is, around the pintle recessions.  In doing the repair, I recommend using a good epoxy, like West Systems 105/205.  Good luck. Keep us informed.      Dave

I've been watching youtube channel Sail Life with Madds (sp) -- not a westsail but he is really rebuilding his boat - a Warrior 38

Here is a link to the middle of a rudder build video where he talks about expanding epoxy foam -- https://youtu.be/2RFzH_NB148?t=325  - might be interesting.

Earlier he also makes from his original rudder - molds for his new rudder.
