    Hi all,

My name is Zach and I'm new to this forum.I currently have an Islander Bahama 30 that is teaching me how to be a boat owner. I live in San Pedro, California and have been sailing -mostly racing - over the last year and a half. Looking out over the next four years I'd like to trade up to a Westsail 32 and begin making some long cruises.  I'm here to listen in on the conversations and learn as much as I can about these really beautiful boats before I start looking to buy one. I've already checked out two on the dock next to mine; Thousand Summers being one of them (the name of the other escapes me). I haven't sailed on one yet so that is one of the first goals I have over the next few months. I live a block or two from the marina and I spend most of my free time there on my boat, either working on it or sailing. One thing I'm trying to find out are basic things to look for when buying; what upgrades should have been done, what upgrades are needed for blue water cruising, and trouble spots to look for when inspecting them. Otherwise, I'm hoping to possibly contact local owners in need of crew, maybe for trips over to Catalina or something along those lines (easier for my schedule just now). I'm looking forward to see where this website takes me, regards - Zach

Hi Zach , I can't tell you anything about a W32  because we have a W28 . You sound level headed and going in the right direction .

I can recommend one thing though , go to Bud's site . westsail.com and get a copy of his service manual .

    Good luck , Mark .

Hello Zach.   Welcome to our forum.  Somewhere in our archives is, probably, the answer to any question you might have.  If it’s not, then just ask.    You mentioned you have never sailed a W-32.   Well,  if you’re ever in Portland, Oregon just stop by and that problem can be solved.  Saraband is always kept “ready to sail”,  with coffee served.   We’re on a river here though so there will be no long ocean swells.      Good luck,  Dave

Thanks for the compliment, I have already been humbled by my relatively straightforward IB30 so I have an idea what I could be in for. That said since I've had my boat I've learned how to fiberglass, splice electrical wiring, I ripped out the Edson binnacle and installed a tiller, installed an engine control, and a bunch of other things besides. My current project is replacing a gnarly headliner with shiplap. I'm beginning to develop some ideas of what I can and can't do/teach myself to do on a boat.

I found the service manual and began looking through it. I see already that the boomlet can present major issues; the stainless steel version seems like an attractive upgrade to look into. The manual is also great for exactly the sort of information I was looking for; it's like a survey checklist. I think I have a bit to learn about cutter rigged boats too; I've never even been on one (yet).

One question I have is whether no/most/all WS32s had headliners or finished cabin overheads. I see a spread of choices, which leads me to believe that people are trying to deal with a headliner/unfinished overhead situation. Which is identical to what I'm doing on my IB30 at the moment.

Thanks for the offer. If I ever get up that way I'll drop you a line. I'm down in LA but I do head up to the PWN from time to time.

Hello Zach and welcome to the forum.  Like others have already said, if you have a Westsail question this is the place to get the answers.

I think you'll find owning any boat is a hands on experience and you're wise to invest the time learning about the W32 before you buy one.  We've owned two.  The first required some upgrading and cruising specific improvements. The second needed about everything you can imagine but she's ship shape now and we sail her regularly.

We're located in Newport Beach - pretty close to home for you - if you'd like to see the boat or talk Westsails or go for a sail let us know.  Always happy to be a part of someone's Westsail journey.

    Cheers,

    Don and Nancy - (714) 788-4410

    Hi Don and Nancy,
Thanks for the kind invitation, I may just take you up on that offer. I'll send you a text soon about it. It looks like we'll be having some nice weather for a few weeks. I would love to hear about your experiences with the W32s and cruising mods for them.
