Hi - Looking for marine surveyor

    I'm making an offer on a W32 in the northeast (Bridgeport CT), but live in the midwest and I'm looking for referrals for marine surveyors and transporters. Hoping to own a W32 soon - I'll be keeping her in the great lakes for a few years and getting her outfitted for cruising.

    Any recommendations appreciated.

    Gerald, the best guy to get for the survey is Bud Taplin, our fearless leader. If you contact him there is a better than even chance he knows the boat and can tell you some things to look for. HAPPY SAILING

    Thanks Danny - I contacted Bud and have exchanged some messages, but this W32 is on the opposite side of the country. I went ahead and made the offer. I feel like a damn 10 year old with Christmas a few weeks away ...

    Gerald:  Since you seem to have purchased the boat -- Welcome aboard -- and maybe a Google search for "vessel self survey" will get you started. 

    Then I'd recommend you take a lot of images of the vessel all around inside and out as a base line - use hi rez images.  Then of course you could post the images online and we could help you with your do list:).   

    I'd also recommend Buds' latest owners manual - it has a section called Misc information that along with the rest of the manual will help you along.

    I have my Nikon packed and 3 lens - I did find a local surveyor today (insurance requires one). Also been reading 'Inspecting the Aging Sailboat' by Don Casey. Bud sent me a list of things to look out for too. 

    If for some reason this falls through (very unlikely at this point), I have decided a W32 is the only thing I'd be shopping for. This one needs some work, but I love working on stuff and have a well equipped workshop.

    Should have some pictures to share soon and I've set up a blog and will get the re-fit documented. I'm planning to keep her on Lake Erie for the next few years to get experience sailing her, and get her outfit for cruising, then spend a while on the east coast and then go see the world.
