End Cap Sealant on Bowsprit

    Hi there I’ve been refinishing my bowsprit and can’t figure out what the original sealant was that you can see below in the photos.  It’s a brown putty (still pliable after 30+ years) that has a strong spruce scent to it.  Does anyone know what it might be? If so, do I need to put more on or can I get by with what is still there now?

    Hello Zach,   That old caulk is “Dolphinite”.  Now just named “Dolphin” Bedding compound.  A good product.  You can get by not using bedding compound on the end of the sprit but positively use something to seal the 4 screw holes in the side, whether you use those screws or not.  (They’re not really necessary).  Unfortunately Dolphin costs about $50 a quart and you would only need about a tablespoon.    Good luck with the project.     Dave

    Thanks very much for the quick help Dave.  I sealed up the holes and didn’t add anything else under the end cap.  Really appreciate it
