Topping Lift

    Terry, I would recommend using a Garhauer rigid boom vang.  Contact me for pictures of the installation.

    The rigid vang that Bud sells is working great on Pygmalion, I plan on removing the topping lift next time someone is up the mast.

    A rigid vang may work quite well but a block and tackle type vang will definitely not.  My main traveller is on the cabin top so I have no need for a vang.  However, the topping lift for me is essential for keeping all loads off the main while hoisting; otherwise, sail stretch and eventual loss of shape (or worse).  The amount of tension in the sail when hoisting without a topping lift is indicated by the huge additional effort to raise those last 6 inches to the top of the mast!

    I agree with Ralph. The vang was one thing we got rid of right away.  As cruisers we found it to be an a nuisance. We have the traveler mounted in front of the dodger so it is not needed except for off wind work and for that we use a preventer. We also have center hatch and store the dingy on top which it also hindered.

    But for day sailors and weekenders I can see the convenience of a rigid vang.
