In 1968 responding to a newspaper sponsored challenge, the Golden Globe, Robin Knox-Johnston sailed Suhaili, a Westsail 32 look-a-like, singlehanded non-stop around the world, becoming the first person to do so.

A commemorative race is proposed for the 50th anniversary of this event in 2018....

This is a very interesting proposal.  The conditions are exclusive, duplicating Sir Robin's achievement.  For example, boats are limited to about 17 "types", 32 to 38 feet long  including Westsail 32s, that being the type of boat Suhaili was.  Entries are limited to 20, vetted for experience.  Manual navigation.  And yes, sail around the world from Falmouth UK without stopping.

The 1968 Golden Globe event (It wasn't a race, it was the first person to sail around the world singlehanded without stopping) was wildly spectacular.  Two books about it are...

       Godforsaken Sea

A World Of My Own  by Robin Knox-Johnston

I've been very excited about this since first hearing of it. Fantastic idea and I hope at least a few Westsails can participate.

Agreed that the first Golden Globe really generated some of the great sea-stories of all time. A couple more books from that saga: "A Voyage for Madmen" and "Donald Crowhearst's Strange Last Voyage"

2018 might produce a few more good reads.

Apologies, Godforsaken Sea is about a different round-the-world race.  It's a good read, but it's not relevant here.

Two other, first person, accounts of that original 1968 race are:  Bernard Moitessier's The Long Way (La Longue Route), and Nigel Tetley's  "Trimaran Solo: the story of Victress' circumnavigation and last voyage.
