Perkins Wiring

I'm in the process of rewiring my boat, including the engine and instrument panel. Some of my gauges have apparently been rewired before, and not to original specs. I'd like to return as much as possible to the original wire colors, etc, but I'm having difficulty finding a good copy of the Perkins wiring diagram.

There was a page in the W32 Factory Build Manual that I had once cleaned up considerably, but not enough to read all the fine print. Although it probably changed from year to year, I think most of it was fairly consistent. My intention is to create a colorized version of the image that appear in the manual. Unfortunately, the original scans had insufficient resolution to allow me to read any of the finer print, regardless of the cleanup.

A snapshot of a portion of the new page, in development...

If someone has a printed Build Manual in good condition and could make me a high-resolution scan that I can use for the rest of the detail information, I'll be happy to share the end results with the Assoc. If I can locate a manual in really good condition and would be willing to send it to me, I would even consider rescanning the entire manual and then sending the original back to you.

When we re-wired Mary Rose V, we upgraded to all mechanical gauges with adjustable alarm points.  We feel this was a good upgrade and not too expensive.  It required very little wiring.  We added a transmission oil pressure guage to the mix.  All we had to do was cut and drill a thin piece of starboard to make a new dashboard so it would accomodate the new gauges.  Just a thought!

I missed your reply, Don... thanks for the suggestion. At present, I still don't know which gauges work and which don't. Once I get the engine back in and get everything hooked up, I'll take a tally of the situation. If some are bad, I will likely replace them with mechanical, but leave the working ones as they are (for now).

Snap a photo of your panel (or send a link if you have one already).

    Thanks.

Attached is a thumbnail of the new wiring diagram that I created for my engine (Perkins 4.108). I don't know how similar it is to most of the 4.108s installed in other Westsails, asmine is a 1987 engine, but I think they were fairly uniform with regard to loom colors, etc. Hopefully, it can be a help to other owners as well.

If you notice any discrepancies, let me know and I'll change the masters on my server.
