    Hi Tom,

I just spoke to Ken, who painted the mast for me. They used zinc chromate to prime and then a two-part epoxy by Sterling which according to him is no longer in business. He said that Awlgrip is the equivalent available today. I remember that I had them match the color for Krylon "Almond" because I used that to paint the tabernacle. The hull and topsides are still the original gelcoat, which is an off white ivory color and I wanted the stick to match. Makes it easy to touch up. I keep a can of Krylon " Almond" on board. The mast is not as shiny as it used to be, but still looks great after 15 years.

In looking through some photos of W32 masts that I downloaded, one of you fellows have nice hoop style steps up the mast.   I'm thinking it might be prudent to duplicate this and wanted some recommendations and sources of the steps.   Sorry, but I cannot recall the exact boat and it may have been in the discussion of lazy jacks.  -Tom Koehl

    Tom,

About 6 years ago I painted Jasmine's mast.  It previously had a very bad awlgrip job that was failing.  I used a 2 part paint from Signature Finish.  It has lasted wonderfully.  I highly recommend it.  There was a prep step that included some brand of bathroom cleaner that I was told to pick up from the grocery.  I used it as a wash and then started painting.  I was told to leave the awlgrip that was solid and feather it out.

Call tom at Signature Finish (they also make Honey Teak).  He will walk you thru it and talk to you anytime day or night.

    Good Luck,

    rich
