I have recently striped and disassembled our two salon hatches in order to reseal, re-lexan, and re-varnish.  In doing so i noticed that there was no stain or varnish on the lip area that the lexan drops into.  My question is whether or not this is an aesthetic issue or if it is known that silicone or other sealing substances do not work as well on varnish?  I would like to seal the whole darn thing if i can, is this i good option?  My plan is 7+ coats of Epifines varnish with 2 coats of cetol clear on top.  Its our first round of teak on the boat so we are going to do it right at least once before any drastic measures are taken...

For the areas that you are refinishing - have you checked out the Cetol that is "clear" rather then the translucent Cetol (reddish as I have on my boat)... I guess I'm wondering why the two different products when Cetol has the 2 coat color and then the 2 coat gloss recommendations? I'll assume it worked in your testing. 

There is a follow on product by the chemists who cooked up Cetol - that's supposed to be better - don't have the name handy.
