SL555 Windlass Mounting to Wooden Bowsprit

    I'm looking for ideas on how to smartly and securely mount a Simpson-Lawrence 555 2-speed windless on the wooden bowsprit.  I'm looking forward to the feedback.

    Before we changed our bowsprit to SS, we had a SL555 mounted on a wooden one.  A simple plate with the bolting pattern was put ontop of the wood and the windlass ontop of that.  The bolts holes in the windlass are outboard of the sprit itself.  The bolts were long ones that actually passed all the way through the deck with another identical plate in the anchor locker serving as a backing plate.  In this way the sprit was actually sandwiched by the windlass mounting arrangement.  It was very robust but I didn't like having extra holes in the deck.

    Mine is mounted to four blocks of teak adjacent to the 'sprit on both sides with all-thread down threw the deck to backing plates below. This arrangement adds support to the bowsprit and is extremely robust. Be sure to properly seal the sprit top and holes with viscous epoxy and caulk well around the bottom of the windlass and all holes threw the deck.
