I just replaced my boomkin with Doug fur as suggested by Bud. I bought over sized raw lumber and had it milled to actually be a bit wider and thicker than the original. Then using original boomkins as a template and drilled hole in them and tried to rehang the windvane and pulpit/rail. It didn't work, I guess because of the difference in the size...anyway I had to restart and the second time I dry fit everything into place before marking and drilling holes. I then used penetrating epoxy for all the surfaces including the holes and finished with Cetol to match the cap rails. Then attached the boomkin and then the wind vane and railing. It was a very time consuming project but it looks good in the end and with the thicker wood and upgraded fastners should be good for a while.
