PVC Hatch Framing

When I rebuilt Second Wind I installed Lewmar hatches in the V-Berth and Lazarette.  To fit them I had to fabricate teak frames in which to mount them and over time the overlapped corner seams have opened enough to allow rain water intrusion.  I've pulled and rebedded them twice and finally gave up on the wood framing.  Instead, I bought a couple of 12 foot lengths of smooth 1x6 PVC plank at Lowes and made up new frames with bonded 45 degree joints.  I figured that it was worth a try, since the majority of the boat is "plastic" anyway!   After careful trimming and installation they're nice and tight, but as to the durability of the PVC I keep scratching my head.   I painted the frames white before installing them and while I wouldn't use PVC for anything structural, for trim it seems fine. Has anyone ever used the PVC before for a project like this?   -Tom Koehl

If your PVC material is at all similar to the material made by Starboard, then it should stand up well.  Starboard does.
