    • I am wondering about the size of winches required on a W32, I have pads for four on my mast, two pads on my boom, I have built two mounts on the bulwarks, and will probably need two on the cabin top, I will not be able to afford new selftailers so I am looking for used on the Internet. What I need is some advice on the sizes that are required. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know about required, but I can tell you what is installed on my factory built W32.

    2 x Lewmar 44, yankee sheets
    2 x Lewmar 30, staysail sheets
2 x Lewmar 30, main and jib halyards.
1 x Lewmar 18, on the boom for jiffy reefing
1 x Barlow 10, for the staysail halyard.

All the Lewmars are self tailing.

Bottom line is get the largest size primary winches you can afford.  Smaller winches on the halyards work fine, except maybe you want a two speed winch for the main halyard in case you want to go up on a boatswains chair.

There is a pretty fair selection of used standard winches available at Minney's Marine Surplus Store in Newport Bech, CA.  Very few used self-tailing winches though.

Thanks, out here it is impossible to get anything used except long distance, so it's nice to know what I need, is there a minimum size for each use, then I could be sure to get something appropriate? Thanks nick, self tailing is probably not in the budget but is there anyplace that it is necessary.
