Kedge Anchor at Stern

    I have a nice Fortress anchor disassembled and stowed in my v-berth.
    I've been thinking it might make more sense hanging it from a bracket on my boom gallows frame so it's readily available for kedging or whatever.
    Any opinions?
    Recommended anchor brackets?

    You can never have too much ground tackle ready to go.

    There is a rail mount available for a Danforth.  Not sure if it would fit a Fortress but since they are similar it's worth checking out.

    Sea Gypsy (Hull #743) keeps a 25# Danforth at the ready on the Port post of the boom gallows. We've only needed it once, but were glad it there & handy.

    On Second Wind I keep a 25# Danforth in a bracket on the gallows frame and keep the rode in the lazarette with the line coiled in a bucket, ready to go.   Used it once while anchoring on the ICW and hope I won't need it to kedge.  For kedging I think it's a better choice to use a bow anchor and the Simpson Lawrence windlass, just for the power to get the boat off the shallows.   -Tom

    Hi,

    I have a second windlass on my boomkin. After anchoring in the Sacramento Delta I thought it might be better to have some winching power astern. Then I ended up in Nawiliwili Harbor in Hawaii and anchored there with two anchors off the bow and a 25lb CQR. It was blowing when I anchored in the morning and after a quick trip to the store, the gusts were already above 50, and the boat was dragging sideways towards the breakwater. Somebody had taken my dinghy to secure their boat and I was getting desparate. I found the dinghy, rowed out and luckily drifted into Polaris, my W32, hauled the dinghy which was spinning in the air on the painter. I let out more stern anchor line and tied that to the bow, causing the boat to swing into the wind and stopped the dragging . The next day after the tropical depression had passed, it took many hours to weigh both anchor and relocate to a better spot in the harbor.

    Lesson: Fore and Aft anchoring is fine in a narrow spot. But definitely not out in the open, let it all hang out from the bow!
