staysail for 32

    Hi,

    I have an unused staysail for a 32. Made by Hood in Sausalito to be a "club footed staysail".(that was printed on the sail bag).  I had the std sail up when the Hood guy came to measure and he commented on how nicely it was made to fit the rig. I found out when I collected the new sail at the Hood loft that it was made in their east coast loft to specs he sent them. He had medical issues and I have not seen him since.

    I assume he had communication issues, It took me a couple of weekends trying to fit the sail to realize that it was not made to use a boom, it has a fairly large sheet ring rather than the  grommet that shackles to the boom on the std staysail. Other than this it seemed to be a good fit. It is fairly heavy cloth and has reef points.

    I decided to deal with it later and since then it has been in the sail bag in storage and never used, Now I think I will pass it on as I like the boom and do not want to re rig the sheeting.

    I have seen a few posts on the forum discussing getting rid of the staysail boom so if you have that in mind here is a brand new staysail to fly with no boom.

    Hi Chris,

    I still have the sail and am still awaiting 2 replies to details and answers to

    questions I emailed to others. I now have the sail aboard to hoist and take some pics.

    I paid $1900 for the sail, it is still new and unused and I will sell for $800.

    Please reply if you are or are not interested so I can tack or go about.

    What is the difference in the cut of a club footed staysail and one not bent to the boom?

    I have a club foot staysail that I converted to loose footed and it just does not fly right

    Hi Mike,

    "Club foot" is not a term I use, somebody at hood printed it on the sailbag.

    On my boat the stasL is hanked to a stay at the luff,  with a line run at the lower few hanks to accomodate the reefing folds.

    "Bent on" is not a term I would use in this instance. On my boat the stasL is loose footed in as much as it is attached to a s.s. loop on the stern end of the boom by a shackle to a gromet in the clew corner of the sail.

    The boom rotates about a pedistal mount approximately 3 feet astern of the stay

    so the radius of the boom swing shortens the foot set of the sail for off wind.

    If you free fly or hank on your sail and how and where you run the sheets is the

    composition of your "not right" issue.

    My staysail is hanked on, flies 'free' (no boom) and how & where I run the sheets is as per Bud's advice.

    My problem with it is, when the wind is anywhere aft of the beam the staysail has no shape. It's too 'full bellied' and just spills wind. It's only when it's sheeted in on a close haul or on a close reach that it acts like a sail.

    It was originally boomed and I've wondered if by my eliminating the boom it needs to be cut differently.

    If your blocks for the stay sail sheets are on tracks, then for deeper angles you may need to move the blocks fwd. For ref. look the sheet angle compared to the stay sail stay, while close reaching, then try to keep that angle when broad or deep broad reaching. i.e if the clew riases to much, you need to move the car forward which should help add downward force to the clew and bring the angle back to where it is suppose to be.  All the boom does, is make it a bit easier to add downward forces to the sail. i.e. if you let the boom fly up the sail shape is very very bad.

    If you do not have tracks then you may need to have a snatch block mid line (could be from where the jack line is ) to pull down the sheet to get the correct angles. (Be cautious that the blocks don't hit the deck hard on the tacks)
