    I've got a brand new Lewmar #16BST  Bronze winch for sale.  Unused still in the box.  Lewmar Part # 49016019.  Excellent for halyards or as a staysail sheet winch.

    hey kevin

    i am somewhat interested in the winch. i have W28 hull #68 and want it for the staysail sheet, but i am not sure how or where to mount it. i plan to do away with the club on the staysail, so the existing cabin top position is probably not going to work..  comments?  i found some dimensions for that model, so i plan to do some research when i get to the boat later this week.  

    i am located in australia, so i would need to contribute a little more $ for the freight.

    i note that you sailed for 30 days into headwinds, so i am curious as to what sail arrangements you used.  i am planning to replace my tiny 145 sq. ft. headsail, so an indication of a more balanced arrangement would be helpful.

    James,

    Like you we free'd the foredeck and got rid of the club on our staysail ! 

    The standard cabin top mount may be usable depending on how you choose to rig your Staysail sheet(s).  We have gone with a single sheet that is attached with a 2:1 self tending block and tackle that attaches to the Staysail clew.  The sheet is lead to the deck and aft on the cabin top to the winch mounted on the stb. side of the companion way.  On some W28's there is an awthwartship  track for the staysail tack, on others like ours, there is just a deck mounted block midship on the cabintop forward of the mast.

    Another alternative is dual sheets with 2 short lengths of track mounted on the cabin top with genoa cars or blocks and the sheets lead to cleats on the cabintop on each side of  the companion way. I've had a set of tracks and cars for that installation for years, but we have found our current single line system satisfactory.

    Our 30 day passage on the wind from Rarotonga to Hawaii was on a different full keel boat similar to our current W28.  We found that a single reefed main and a 110% jib gave us the best overall balance of speed and ride comfort.  We broke our rudder 650 miles south of Hawaii but were able to steer the rest of the way by balancing the sails carefully. Thank goodness for a full keel! 

    On our current W28 we normally sail with a Mainsail, 125% roller reefing Genoa and a 100% Staysail.  When we are hard on the wind we get our best balance with a single reef in the Main, the Staysail sheeted in fairly tight and the Genoa reefed to about 110%.

    sounds like your staysail sheet leads from a central point forward of the mast to a block on the clew, back to the central point and then to the cabintop winch.  my staysail tends to backwind my rather too full mainsail, so by fixing a couple of short tracks to the sides of the cabin top, i can probably gain a little flattening on the sail.  i suspect that a staysail set without a club should probably be cut a little differently than for with a club, but i am certainly no sailmaker.

    my boat has the athwartship track in front of the mast.

    with a full main, the tiny jib and the staysail i have very heavy weather helm.  i should try reefing the main to see how she balances.

    i am sure balance would improve with a larger jib and less main.

    I think you will find on your W28 that a first reef in the main will help balance the boat.  We reef the main first, if conditions warrant we next reef the headsail, our third reefing is back again to the main for its second reef.

    It seems that keeping the CE forward is the best way to balance our W28.
