We have a 1973 WS32 (Hull #77) with its original Volvo-Penta MD2B engine. We are thinking of replacing the almost 50 year old beast. Any suggestions of what modern engine would fit with minimal modifications to the engine bay?

    Many thanks!

Bud sold us a 25HP Beta to replace our old Volvo MD11C.

We're very happy with the new motor!  It's physically smaller, much lighter (hundreds of pounds) and smoother running.  It starts instantly compared to the 20 to 30 seconds of cranking it often took to get the old Volvo running.

Bud had templates to help with the install and the entire engine change only took 3 days.  One day to remove the Volvo and clean up the engine room, one day to install the Beta and align the new motor and shaft and a final day to hook up fuel lines, panel and wiring!

Hello Vikram,   Over the years I have installed nearly every popular brand of modern diesels into Westsails.  Most of them multiple times.  I have not found one brand to be easier to install than the others.  I have found Yanmars to be slightly more difficult because of their larger exhaust system.  Not really a big deal though.  There is no way of knowing which brand is the better engine.  Now days most engines are marinized Kabota or Mitsubishi engines.         One small trick for an easier install, if there is an issue, is to modify the motor mount brackets, or feet.  The engine marinizer made the feet so they could advertise a minimum over-all size package.  They can easily be removed and modified by a welder,  if desired.  It’s not a big job but often not thought of.  An inch or two In  one direction or another can make an install easy or impossible.      Another tip:  repaint the motor mounts even though they are new, before installation.  They live in a harsh environment and can benefit from the extra attention.     Good luck,  let us know your choice.    Dave

Thanks, Dave. We are going to go with the Beta (Kubota) 38. It is likely to take a couple of months to get here. I will keep your suggestions in mind when it finally gets here.

    Cheers!
