I recently received the spun bronze hawse pipes which Stephen Wylie had made to original Westsail specs, which I intend to use as replacements for the original spun brass ones used as scuppers on my boat. I tried to use the hose sections supplied with your cast hawse pipes (I have not finished installation of all of the hawse pipes) but the fit is too snug and I am afraid that the thinner metal will be bent by trying to force them in (not even considering what the caulk will do.) What do you suggest I use? Stephen mentioned that his boat has the holes for the hawse pipes glassed in, so that the hose is unnecessary. Is that the best solution?

I just want to make sure that everyone else knows that Bud's cast hawsepipe parts (hose/cardboard tube, pipes themselves) are not interchangeable with my hawsepipes, as they have different outside diameters.

I don't think using a hose to cover the outside of the spun hawsepipes will work if you are removing/replacing hawsepipes with the spun pipes, as opposed to using them for scuppers with a custom built hole.

The installation is a snug fit in the original hole, and I doubt you could get a hose onto the outside diameter then install it, unless the rubber was a millimeter thin. You'd have to make the hole bigger, and then you are back to doing a lot of finnicky work instead of an easy install, out with the old, in with the new.

As I believe was mentioned somewhere in the old forum (maybe in an old World Cruiser brochure?), the original hawsepipes were recognized as a potential leak area, especially when the metal started to crack after years of wear. The original owner of my boat realized this early in the game and glassed in those areas so it wasn't a concern for me.

For the install I just did I slathered the pipes with caulking and slid them into place. When I screwed them down, the excess caulking filled in all the air space and then oozed out to be scraped away. No rubber hose needed.
