Hopefully, you will make it out on the water on the first day of the new year.  It a Westsail tradition -- at least for some.

Thanks for the notice Jay.  I'll be out there with my camera to take pictures of all the other Westsails.   Our weather in Portland is forecast to be about 32 degrees, clear and breezy.  That means Head winds here.  As always Saraband will be having a good time and the cabin temperature will be about 75 degrees with our Wallas diesel heater on high.  Looking forward to it.  See you all there.

Happy New Year ! Well I actually did get out on the water New Years Day . However , bare poled and motoring From Eddie's Marine in Wilmington to home port Alamitos Bay in Long Beach , Ca. Tasks completed were blister fix new water line stripe , bottom paint , pull mast and install new steamer / deck combo light , whew.

Westsailors stopped by to check it out . Kurt Brown was one with buddy Ron , whom is newly in the water after a refit and James . James is a fairly new owner and is fitting out his new to him W32 , and planing on cruising with his wife as soon as they retire this year .

Again HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL !!

Well!  The New Years Day sail didn't quite go as planned:   The strong East winds and cold created a situation here on the Columbia.  We got out of our slip OK, as it is partially protected from the wind.  The river was flowing at 2.5k + from the East and had a nasty chop on top of it also coming from the East.  At 80% throttle, normally 6.8k, we could just barely hold our position.  We once saw 19k on the anemometer, but nothing less.  25k and above was the norm, with gust to 35k.  As we could not afford to allow ourselves any movement towards the West, I chose not to raise any Main sail nor even the trysail.  With freezing water coming over the bow every 10 seconds, I chose also not to raise the jib nor storm Jib.  So After 1/2 hour with the cold wind, strong current, and a screaming diesel, we limped back into the more protected marina.  We did not sail.  There were no other boats in all of Portland out that day.

Back in the marina, we celebrated that nothing was broken and had a great time in the 75 degree cabin.  We were soon joined by the Scribner family, ex owners of the W-32 Gamen, and with 10 people aboard  continued to have one of the best New Years ever.

Happy New Year,    Dave & Ruth,     Saraband

    Dave - Sounds rough...

SF Bay was great here ... motored over to McCovey cove then wrapped north around the SF water front... then sailed north on a Stb tack to Angel Island and back to Alameda Marina... Sun fun and cold ...

Also - sure glad we did the hull fairing last year -- this year is much colder... Thanks again.

I did not sail on January 1st, but I was out across the Sound tied to a mooring ball on Dec 31 - Jan 2 with two other boats. I motored once to take my pup to do her business, and had an offer from a fellow boater to play Assassins Creed on his new Playstation and smoke a doobie at the Eagle Harbor public dock. I politely declined and motored back to the mooring ball, then made a beef roast in the pressure cooker and watched a movie on the laptop. I motored back into a headwind the next day and was happy to watch some boats with sails up enjoying the light winds outside the marina. Can't wait for warm weather and to enjoy all of the upgrades achieved over the winter. Hope to see some Westsails out there in the Salish and beyond. Happy New Year!

I spent at least 3 hours aboard my boat, on the 1st -  dreaming of future adventures. Does that count?

I'm sorry Gary, but you only get one point for that.

    hahaha :)

The irony was that it was an absolutely perfect day for a nice jaunt up the coast, clear skies, flat seas, 10k breeze. But my bowsprit and rigging is in my garage! Horrors!
