wanting to crew

My name is Robert Smith, although I sometimes go by Bob. I am 56 years old and in excellent health. Currently I live just South of Yosemite (Hwy 41) where I owed my own business from 1990 to 2008. I currently work for the Dept of Homeland Security as part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. I am at a crossroads in my life and am asking for advice from those who have been there before me. My goal at this part of my life is to follow my dreams and eventually purchase a Westsail 32 and 'sail the world'. My job is such that I can live anywhere there is an airport. I have no ties to speak of and no commitments other than myself. So these are my questions: At my age I might be a bit cynical about things and as Judge Judy says, "Don't pee on my leg, and tell me it's raining". I know the difference. But that might be a good thing. I don't have time for B.S. So..., I am a novice sailor but a quick learner. Well traveled and a hoot to be around. I want and need to gain as much experience as possible on Westsails. I am looking to crew on a Westsail for a prolong period of time. Say from the West Coast to Mexico or to Hawaii or further. Something I could really sink my teeth into. I can deal with most challenges, put up with most things. Heck, it's only life. So, if anyone has any advice for me or any crew position offers, please let me know.

I think Eric Forsyth on Westsail 42 'Fiona'  is still looking for 2 crew for crossing the Atlantic.

From his website:  www.yachtfiona.com (in the 'Fiona News Network' section)

Westsail 42 Fiona has two berths open as the cruise resumes from Lisbon, heading for Madeira, Canaries and Brazil. Estimated departure date is late November. Full cruise schedule posted here. All expenses on the boat are covered. Some assistance with travel to the boat may be possible. If interested, contact Capt. Forsyth for more details here.

    Drake, thanks for your reply.

Westsail 42 Fiona might be just what I'm looking for. After looking at the full cruise schedule I would be interested in the passage from either TOBAGO (departing Feb 15) or PUERTO RICO (March 30) arriving in New York on  May 5, 2012, depending on how I fare as a crew member. Those are shorter passages compared to the Atlantic and the weather would be warmer. Remember, I am a novice sailor with only trailer-sailor experience under my belt. Would no lack of experience make a differance to Capt. Forsyth? Remember, I'm no dummy and am a quick learner. I'll contact the Capt. with my request for those dates and see what he says.

By the way, my business that I owned for 18 years was as a tour bus operator in Yosemite operating from the gateway town of Oakhurst to Yosemite twelve months a year. Nice to see your web site with the Capt's. photos.

    Hi Bob,

I crewed for Eric from Ireland to Portugal and think that he would agree with me that crew having a good attitude can be more important that having tons of experience..  Days or weeks at sea with someone with who you don't get along with can be miserable to say the least.

I'm publishing an 11 part video documentary on the youtube channel "DrakeParagon" of our sail.  The last two episodes are of an interview with Eric in which he talks all about what's most important to him when he's looking for crew.  So please subscribe to www.youtube.com/drakeParagon and stay tuned! :)

    Fair winds, happy sailing,
    Drake
