we have a couple of damaged 5/8” turnbuckles. What is the alternative to our original bronze turnbuckles? Do we go for very expensive bronze or better value for money’s down looking at stainless steel?

Stainless is fine as long as the threaded shaft is Bronze . SS buckle and SS shaft don't like each other . And now for some Westsail folklore . Back in the mid 90's when we got our W 28 , I was informed by Bud that there was a service bulletin out about the fact that there was a problem with all SS turnbuckles (sorry I can't remember the details) anyhow we started checking and sure enough we found cracks . OK I think I remember ...??? the turnbuckles we had , had a coupler barrel nut connecting SS right and left hand threaded rod  and that was where some of the cracks were .

Ivan/Mark - check out https://www.westsail.org/itemsthatbreak  - there is a picture of my other toggle that didn't break -- and a link to other items with issues on the page.

The toggle that did break - broke on the stb side Boomkin - splitting the port boomkin into a long splinter -- which just missed me in the cockpit -- we didn't drop the mast either...

Here is my album  https://photos.app.goo.gl/kpHXN3RibXY4TLUm6 on the repairs...
