Westsail 32 large hatch removal

    I am looking to remove the large wooden hatch in the center of coach roof from my 1976 W32. It is leaking pretty bad and running under the headliner to the sides of the coach roof. I need to remove the frame and rebed it.

    I am assuming that I just need to remove the wooden plugs, the remove the screws and carefully remove it.  I am looking for any tips or tricks from others that have rebed this  hatch.

    Hello Jason,

    You're not alone on this one I just finished repairing and rebuilding my center coming and hatch.  I also had the same problem with my headliner and have some thoughts on how to repair that as well.  The direct answer to your question is "yes" knock out the bungs and remove the screws from the trim and coming. Once the headliner trim is removed I had to run a sawsall blade between the coming and the deck to cut away a couple of screws and the old caulking. Once the coming is free either push it up or pull it down to remove. If your wood is in good shape (mine was not) you can re-bed it and screw it back in place.  After I reinstalled the new coming I back-filled the crack between the deck and the coming from the topside with an epoxy putty made from West system epoxy and 403 microfibers.  No leaks...

    I've attached some pictures from my rebuild.  I had to repair the headliner, rebuild the coming and interior trim along the cabin top and the headliner seam, and build a new hatch. It's a bit of work but I'm satisfied with the final product.

    Thank you Don for reply, my hatch looks like it is slightly different on the deck....but I think the idea is the same....I'll give it a try and go from there.

    It appears that I have about a 3" piece of trim around the base of the combing part....not too sure how it's connected to the combing.

    I'm going to start gathering materials and start the project in a week or two...weather here isn't the greatest. As you can see I sealed it temporarily with 4000UV...so no more leaking....verified with 3 days of rain!!!!
