Cabin Sole Finish

    So we’re finally going to refinish the teak and holly interior sole. I figured someone out there might have a recommendation on the proper finish to use?  I want a durable high gloss finish - poly urethane? Varnish? Other?  Thanks for your suggestions. Don

    Aloha D & N,

        Many choices for this project including leaving it bare. I like the finished look with non skid throw rugs. Refinished mine about 15 years ago and it is ready to be done again. I used Varathane and it held up well against years of use and an 80 lb dog. Next time I plan to use the stuff they use on gymnasium floors. Extra tuff and will last a long time. When doing yours if you use a stain before final finish it smoothes any discolorations.  Lee

    Good stuff in the Practical Sailor article.  Being slip resistant is important but I'm not sure I want to put sand, salt, or walnut powder in the varnish. 

    I think I'm leaning toward the Varathane option.  We once had a kitchen table that we refinished with Varathane - not the same as the sole in a sailboat -  but after three boys, homework, projects, a lot hot meals and spilt milk, the table top looks almost as good 25 years later without any touch up coats. A very durable product..

    I'm still a little ways away from getting started so I hope others will share their experience but I appreciate your thoughts and advice.

    I have used Varathane exterior water based on the cabin sole of my last 3 boats and have been quite happy with the results I've gotten.   It drys in about 3 hours, lays down nicely and cleans up with water. 

    I sanded with 320 grit between coats.  I applied 4 or 5 coats as I recall, my current sole was done about 5 years ago and still looks good.  I went with Satin finish and have not had any issues with it being slick when wet.
