Broken Rudder Pintle

We discovered our top pintle broken. CALYPSO (W32) was built in 1972, hull #44, and has the early style pintles & gudgeons. Does anyone have information on a replacement manufacturer? Any opinions about using stainless steel vice bronze as a replacement?

I have the stainless as well. A quote from Port Townsend foundry was $3000 for a complete set of bronze. gulp.
I decided to stick with the stainless. Since yours are probably 40 years old, stainless might be ok again? If so, a fab shop should be able to make some up quite easily.
The other option is to have Bud have the company who is making the new rudder also make up some FG gudgeons.

I also have the early stainless pintles and gudgeons.  About three years ago I got a quote of $1000 from a fabricator here in Long Beach, Ca to make a new set.  The installation would be extra.  I may do it the next time I haul out.

This may give you an idea of how to get the brackets replaced.  Good luck.

Might a welding repair be an option?  I found this online

Some types of welding melt 2 surfaces together so they adhere to each another. Bronze welding does not melt the surfaces to be joined. Instead, bronze welding requires that the 2 surfaces be heated to a high temperature, but a temperature below their melting point. A third metal is then melted and formed over the heated surfaces and joins the 2 pieces together once it solidifies.

the description on Bud's website for fiberglass gudgeons seems like the smartest plan to follow.

The fabricator that I have contracted with to make a new rudder for the W32 is also going to make new fiberglass gudgeons to go along with the new rudder.  If anyone is interested in either one, please contact me directly, at bud@westsail.com.

    Hi,

replacing the gudgeons and pintles is not easy, but can be done. For the ones made out of steel, the trick is to match up the correct steel alloys, otherwise you end up with King Neptune gnawing away on them (think electrolytical corrosion). I do not remember the pintle design on the early W32, but I do remember the problems they caused because the screws corroded.

I am replacing the fiberglass center gudgeon on my W32. It is more than I wanted to bite off, as the misalignment of that was more than I felt comfortable with. The issue is fitting the gudgeon or pintle to the other mating part, especially the mounting holes. I got the mounting holes right, but have to trim the still oversized gudgeon and make the ends square to the pintle shafting with enough space for the Delryn washers, the idea being in  the rotational plane of the rudder, otherwise you'll have friction when turning the rudder. In my case, I discovered that the offset was flexing the rudder, and when in freezing temperatures, may cause cracks in the rudder blade.

Westsail has done otherwise a good job with the fiberglass gudgeons, and I do not see why someone with a will and determination cannot produce a solid fiberglass pintle themselves.

One other approach is to take welding  and machine shop classes at a local college. The teachers are not always cooperative, but at the same time you may learn some skill that helps to make your own parts right there in class. Tell them that you need this for your artistic expression!

I will answer questions dealing with my own experience in these matters if you e-mail me.
