I'm a full time liveaboard on the hook.
I need to remove my Boomkin and won't be reinstalling for a couple weeks.
Is it acceptable to tie a halyard to the port and starboard hawspipes to support the mast?
    Any other concerns or procedures?

    Thank,
    Carl

    Carl,

If I was doing the same I would also hook up the running backstays for more support while on the hook. Also before unfastening anything over the water, boomkin, cross piece, turnbuckles, tools, tie a line to them. Same thing when putting it back together. I'm sure you have thought it through.       Lee

This last summer I did remove the boomkin and I live aboard. We also had a few heavy storms during the process. I basically removed one boomkin at a time keeping the remaining "everything else" attached, no more rigging added. I can provide a link with pictures if you want.

    Good luck

    Michael,
I have spent a bit of time enjoying your blog. Please do provide pictures.
What is meany by removing one boomkin at a time?
Do you have a home made boomkin?
Also, living aboard meaning on the hook or wet slip?
    Thanks,
    Carl

    Carl,

What is meany by removing one boomkin at a time?
There are wooden beams, one port and one on starboard that make the boomkin with a stainless brace totally aft holding the backstay. I simply removed one board at a time leaving all other rigging in tact, slightly loosened. Ill add that my mast is wood - perhaps heaver than aluminum. I even left the pushpit intact only removing the wood beam.

Do you have a home made boomkin?
Well its boat-made, I made it out of dug fir using only a few tools, drill, router for looks, a circular saw, angle finder tool, sander, and tape measure. I even went so far as to cut the boomkin round using my circular saw. Just cut angles until the sander shape it smooth and round.

Also, living aboard meaning on the hook or wet slip?
We were moared at the marina here in Olympia WA, but that said there should be no reason one could not make this part on the hook. Since I made the boomkin last summer I have now found tools that would work without power. Coping saw is my new best friend.

Ill put up more pictures this afternoon at http://www.leavingland.com/repairs/westsail-wood-boomkin-repair/ for you to inspect.

    Michael,
    Thanks for the link.
My boomkin is 1 piece, I'd like to share a picture with everyone but this forums software, "Wasted Apricot" makes it very difficult for me to contribute. I contribute several times daily on other forums but can't do much here and it happens that Westsails are about my top passions in the world. I might give Jack Webb my password so he can post pictures and links for me but Jack has done so much for WOA that I'd hate to burden him. There have been so many things that I've wished to share in the past and haven't been able to. Perhaps if we have this conversation on Cruisrsforum and simply post a link here for other members to follow it would help other members to participate in the topic.
    Thanks Michael,
    Carl

    Carl

Your not the first to complain about photos etc, trust me this website framework is terrible. Hell I could fix all the problems if needed and I am not a web designer by trade.

Anyways I would love to see this one piece boomkin - please post on Facebook or other forum so we can peek at it.

Sorry to piss off web guys but its a fact this portal is not user friendly, period.

    Hi

Just an idea to deal with boomkin. One of the previous owner took off the boomkin and a put in a split back stay.  The boom needs to be shorter than orignal Westsail had so that it clears the split back stay.
