I just received a Don Allen Wind Wand a s a gift ....missing the vane part.
It's a trim tab type vane that looks very nicely suited for a double ender with an outboard hung rudder.
Does anyone know anything about these vanes?
    I can't find anything anywhere.
It is a very nicely made piece of gear.

    thanks

    Jonny,

I'm going to reply to this, simply because nobody else has and I know how frustrating it is to think your post is being ignored.

I do not know anything about this vane... never heard of it. And, like you, I can't find a thing about in a Google search. That's really unusual. If you post some photos, perhaps someone can make a suggestion. Even without photos of the original vane, it should be fairly easy to make a replacement.

Thanks Jack! What a nice reply!
I am going to try to take a few pictures tomorrow at my storage.
AND ...see if I can find my Bill Belcher self steering book. I THINK there may be some info on it in there.
Anyway ...it's a trim tab vane , very nicely made out of cast aluminum , and bronze ...with a fiberglass trim tab that attached to the rudder.
It came off of a gorgeous , 30 ft. wood double ender that unfortunately is going into a landfill...a CRYING shame. I was 3 days too late to save her .....a real beauty. looked just like a baby Westsail.
    I'll keep you posted.

    Johnny,
I did some searching for info on this one also and didn't come up with much.  I saw a couple of threads that dated back to 2007, but no real info.  Sounds like you have a unique unit;-)  I'd be interested in some pics if you can get some.

I'm sorry, Jonny... I've been so busy that I haven't been on the forum, and I didn't think to subscribe to the thread.

Although I couldn't find a think through a Google search, your comment about "finding your Bill Belcher self steering book" made me realize that I just might have that book myself. Mine was actually, "Self-Steering Under Sail: Autopilots and Wind-Steering Systems" by Peter Christian Forthmann. I wonder if that's the one you were thinking of.

At any rate, created a PDF of the 5 or so pages that made reference to it. There were actually some good photos. I'm sending it to you via email. I hope it helps. When I catch up with myself, I'll give you a call and see if there's any way I can assist... it looks like the vane itself is a fairly simple design to duplicate.

    Jonny,

I just discovered that I also had a copy of Bill Belcher's "Windvane Self-Steering Handbook", although there wasn't a great deal of info there. I sent you the pages from that one as well, in case you didn't find your copy.

As for posting an image, there is a thread that explains how to do this. I recently added a section that covers doing it with a Mac (or, Jay added it for me). It does work differently on Wild Apricot's forum software, depending upon the OS (even though it shouldn't).

NOTE: This post previously contained photos of various vane steering installations. After making the post and sending the photos to Jonny, I realized that manufacturer was Wind Wand and not Windpilot. As such, I have removed the long string of photos from this post. Sorry, Jonny. If you ever do trade your Wind Wand for a Windpilot, you now have all the info you need to make a backup vane!

I still haven't figured out how to upload pictures to my post. Anyone know how?????
I really like the Wind Wand ...especially since it's a trim tab type. I think I'm gonna try it.

I remember the Don Allen Co. making steering systems for sailboats back in the dark ages (the early 1970's), and I assume he also made a self-steering windvane.  Sorry I do not have any further information, but I will take a look at some of my very old files to see if I can find anything.
