Hard Hand Rails

    It also happened to be a very economical and easy project. 2x 6m tubing at $10/m - $120,
    6x 1" Tee fittings at $20 a piece - $120, 2ft of ss tube that takes the 1" tube inside - $10, bolts and nuts $10, couple of beers for a welder friend. So $260 altogether plus nice time spent with the friend drinking that beer ;-)
    I fabricated the end fittings to avoid welding on the boat, especially on the bowsprit side where the nav lights wires are inside the tube. The tubes were bent on a spare wheel of a SUV, 2 people, about 10 min each. Here are some pics.

    I do like them and they definitely look like they'd make you feel safer.  I've often been curious why sailboat lifelines are always made of cable or something similar instead of being rigid like they usually are on power boats.  Mine are solid from the aft side of the gate (just forward of the forward end of the cockpit) around the stern to the gate on the other side.  I had to add some solid sections to support my solar panels.  Let us know how you like the all-solid lifeline as time goes on.

    I think Don and Lana on Salty State of Mind blog have all stainless tubing lifelines  (with pictures of the installation).  The only thing I can see a problem with is weight. I have seen steel boats with welded steel pipe thats painted. Ken

    You are right Ken, it is a bit heavier but the wire had its weight too so it is not all adding up. Besides, I've put myself on a weight loss programme ;-)
