    Hi All,

I just bought a W32. It currently has a Perkins 4-108 that according to a Diesel Mechanic report it is frozen. He couldn't turn the crankshaft with a breaker bar. So I'm preparing for the worst case scenario, re-powering with new engine like a  Beta 38 or  a more economic option: a factory remanufactured engine called Not Your Father’s 4108a  from Foley Engines. Here is the link to that engine: http://stage.foleyengines.com/products/specials/not-your-fathers-4108

I would like to know if anybody have used them before. Are you aware of any reviews available for the Not Your Father’s 4108a  from Foley Engines?

    Thanks

    4-108....50HP @ 5000rpm max

You will run this engine typically around 1800 rpm or less cruising and be making about 20HP. Even at 2600 rpm this engine develops less than 30 hp and less than max torque.

    Beta 38....38HP @ 2600 rpm max

develops max torque around 1800 rpm/ 25 hp...typical cruising rpm

    Go with the Beta

    Best, Tom

    Luis:

The Beta 38 has worked very well for the W32... Bud does sell them and will have recommendations.

I would also recommend the "C" panel as it has all the alarms and gauges.

The Perkins - should have parts value.

I'll assume the mechanic made sure that the cylinders were free of water - before trying to turn the engine over.

I've also used Justanswer.com a few times ... I would guess that there is a perkin's expert that can also give you advise for a few $$.

I agree with the others.  The Beta from Bud is your best choice.  A big advantage is the help that Bud Taplin can give you with engine mounts and installation advice.   I've heard of people spending thousands on fiberglass modifications to their engine compartments to fix a brand X engine.

Trans Atlantic Diesels buys old 4-108s.

Another vote for the Beta from me-  parts are easy to get- installation is not difficult-  I did mine myself-  great support from Bud and the other WOA members-  and new vs. rebuilt.

All that being said, the Foley engine looks nice and if the cost differential is too big to swing- seems like a good solution.  But I would definitely look at the cost for each option and make sure that the difference is enough to make the rebuilt choice the right one.

Thank you all for your feedback. This is my 1st Boat and I'm glad it is a W32 for a lot of reasons but mainly for the support I'm getting from this community (W32 owners) and Bud Taplin.

Lyric my W32 is on a Dry Storage right now and I will be working on some other projects in parallel with the Engine situation. I will be educating myself in marine diesel engine topic a bit more and will be attending 2 Diesel Marine Classes at the Annapolis School of Seamanship in October.

I will keep you all posted on my progress.

    Thanks again,

    Luis

Ok I'm considering the re-powering option more seriously now.

    Should I go Beta 35 (35HP @2800 RPM) or Beta 38 (38 HP @ 3600 RPM)? and why?

    Thanks

    Luis
