Time to start gearing up for another SoCal Rendezvous. Kirk Brown and I have been doing some talking about it -- we're in the same marina -- and have come up with some ideas.

We both like the Pine Avenue Pier as a venue -- plenty of room to tie up and to raft up if necessary, lots of shops and restaurants within a few minutes' walk, plus a five minute walk to The Aquarium of The Pacific. With all that going for us, we had four boats show up last year.

Another option we discussed was Oceanside. That would make it easier for the San Diego members, since it's only a short hop up the coast. Downside to Oceanside is that we'd have to collect dock fees (or have them sent to the harbormaster) in advance to have any hope of securing slips.

If anyone has any other ideas or would like to take over hosting, that's fine with me. I've had my boat for five years and I think I've hosted five rendezvous, which is all the fun and frivolity I need in my life.

Well Oceanside would definitley work better for us, we're all the way down in South San Diego Bay..I might actually unglue the boat from the dock for that one!..haha..

I had the chance to attend the 2010 NorCal Rendezvous, and was really impressed by the turnout. I think they had fifteen or sixteen boats show up, and about fifty folks for dinner Saturday night.

USCG Lieutenant James Shull, pilot H-65, stationed at US CGAS San Francisco, gave a good presentaion after dinner Saturday night, stressing safety and preparedness to the group.

I'd like to be able to book someone to speak to our group, but it would frankly be an embarrassment to book a speaker, say, from the local USCG Station, and then have three or four boats and a handful of people show up!

If we're going to have a rendezvous this spring, let's all make a commitment to put some effort into it!

I contacted Karen Schoeppe, the Rainbow Harbormaster, and gave her the dates April 29-May 1 -- she said she'd check with her boss and get back to me.

Just got an email from Karen at Rainbow Harbor -- we're good to go for April 29-May1, 2011.  She'll need copies of your ship's papers (registration/documentation and insurance, as well as a signed rental agreement, which I can email to you.  Cost is up to a dollar a foot per night now, which still isn't too bad.

I'll post more as things develop, but I'd really like to see a better turnout this year than we had last year!!!

I mailed in my paperwork and my check last week, and I got my receipt this past Saturday, so I'm good to go.  Someone else has registered, too, but all it shows on the list is two anonymous members -- I'm guessing that I'm one of them, but have no idea who the other might be.

If I can get some folks to commit to showing up, I'll see if I can line up someone (maybe USCG) to give a safety talk, but I'm not going to try if all we have is a handful of people.  If you're planning to come, let me know right away!

Less than two weeks to go, and so far there doesn't seem to be much interest.  Not knowing how many people are planning to show up makes it pretty hard for me to plan snacks and drinks and such.

If you're planning to attend, go to the 'Events' section and register -- it's free -- so I'll have some idea; otherwise I'll be stuck drinking all that beer myself!
