I need to display Documentation numbers inside my W32.
    Any suggestions for good locations?
    Thanks,
    Carl

I have it carved in to the forward board of the companionway hatch frame, facing aft.

The previous owner of my boat told me mine was on the boat somewhere. I have yet to find it. It is probably in the bilge or some such place. I will probably carve it into a piece of teak which I will no doubt be using for a repair to the companionway area.

On both our prior vessel, a Pearson Vanguard, and our current boat, a Westsail 42, we have understood that the documentation number needs to be "permanently" affixed to the vessel or hull.  The key issue is what is meant by "permanent".

On our Vanguard, the prior owner did a masterful job of drilling the outline of the number into the maststep support beam with a 1/8 drill bit.  It was a thing of beauty (not really), but was certainly permanent.  On our WS42, the prior owner had the number ornately carved or routed into a piece of teak and bolted to the inside of the coaming at the nav station.  This application is nice looking (really), and is fairly permanent.

I have seen the routed number on a board affixed to the hull in an engine room in a lot of boats.  In the Pardey's Talesin they have their number carved into the inside of the cabin side at the conmpanionway/bridge deck location.  You can see it in many of their videos.  If a companionway dropboard is permanent enough then it would look very similar to how the Pardeys have theirs.

I wonder if it's supposed to be somewhere that can be easily seen.  Ours is a very large version of one of those laminated name tags that are on electrical panels, desk nameplates and waitress' name tags, but BIG, like with 4" high numbers.  It's epoxied to the hull in the port side of the under v-berth storage.  Not a place that's particularly fun to get into.  I'm thinking that I should get/make a smaller, prettier version and attach it somewhere more easily seen but leave the original in place as well.

Our number has been engraved onto a large teak board.  It is screwed to the wall under the pull out starboard side settee.  When a normal height person is standing in the boat it isn't visible but if you bend over and look for it, it is in plain sight.

I have a dinette and just noticed a potential location.
Under the table on wall or on section of plywood that hits the cabin sole between the 2 drawers. Both locations allow for the required 3" numbering.
I'm not sure if either location suits me, still serarching.
I found out yesterday from the previous owner that he had it on a board mounted between portlights. Guess he kept it as a souvernier.
When I do this for my boat I definately want it to be the required number size.
I'm still not sure if I want it cognito or boastfully displayed.

Ours is a very large version = BIG, like with 4" high numbers.  They are laninated on the inside of the hull on the starboard side near the top of the pilot berth behind the nav station. They are just above the wood and not to much up in the bullworks and there is a layer of glass & epoxy over them (the # reads very well and is permanent  unless cutting part of the hull away is an option) Any wood carving, lettering, etc. is as your previous owner proved, = removable.

I use the pilot berth as storage +/- so the access is good most of the time and if it is not it is time to clean stuff up = to much stuff.

    Hope this helps:
    Norm

p.s. in the back of the head cabinets on the hull might also be a good place to put them. with a third being on the inside of the chain locker up front and located high so as not to ware or scratch the glass covering the letters.

Permanently sealed on the hull, on stern, which can be seen by opening the stern lazzerate.
