leaking coachroof

    Hi,

    This is my first venture to the new site, it looks good. I'm sure this question was answered on the old message board but I could not find an answer anywhere on the new site.

    I have a leaking coachroof and I've had a hard time find out where the water is coming in to the cabin. Depending on how the boat is laying (water or on the hard) the water seems to roll down behind the interior cabin wood work in different places (aft/port/starboard). This is causing some damage to the wood work on the inside and I'd like to get it fixed.

    My question, before I spend a day to figure out where it comes in, is whether there is a typical spot the coachroof leaks that I should tackle first?

    Many thanks if anyone has experienced this before and shares their experience.

    Carl, do you have dorades? Any hardware that is mounted through the coachroof up from where the water appears is suspect.

    Is the water really from the coach roof? The cap rails leak very nicely also - water runs into the galley shelves etc.

    Thanks for the replies. To answer both the questions.

    Dorades
    I do have dorades on a dorade box (I sealed the seams of the box where it connects on the deck last season with caulk as I was suspicious it was the cause of the water leak), they are plastic and I am sure they are quite old. The dorade itself could be a cause of the leak as water does sometimes appear to come from the dorade box and onto the shelving between the kitchen and the main cabin.

    Cap Rails
    OK, give me some credit to spot the difference from water leaking on the coachroof and the caprails :) (that was supposed to be a smiley face). I of course have leaking caprails too, but I know where they are leaking and it is in a very different place to the leaks on the coachroof.  i can see the caprail leaks quite easily and they are on the list to get fixed. 

    The coachroof leak has just been weird as I can never figure out where it is coming from and all i can figure out to do is take everything off and reset any screws with sealant.

    Any other ideas or experience would be appreciated.

    I've had a persistant leak over my chart table, right under the dorade, but it doesn't seem to be the dorade. If you can figure out how to search the old message board for a thread  where someone found an inconspicuous source for a similar leak. They found a leak where a bolt went through midway along the wood piece that forms the companionway hatch slide. Apparently the slot on the outside (where the metal hatch slide runs) was deep enough to expose the bolt hole allowing water in and through the cabin top. The water may then travel laterally until it finds an opening in the ceiling. There is a bolt at the forward end as well, and as the slot runs all the way forward, it might be worth looking there for your leak.

    I believe someone had an intermittent leak that came from a block mounted to the cabin top. It didn't leak until it was under pressure. So it wasn't apparent when he was looking for it.
