    This is exactly what I have done not long ago. It seems like a perfect solution to me! The key is just inside the companionway, easy to reach and the gauges are completely sealed!
    I actually think it's easier to reach the key this way compared to bending down to almost floor level to reach it.

    Another trick I did on one engine installation was to mount the instrument panel outside on the cabin back.  With the recessed panel, no key sticks out, and it is up and out of the way of a flooded cockpit, and easily visible.
