I came across an ad from SeaworthyGoods.com for their PortVisors, lexan rain shields for portholes of all shapes and sizes.  They list two sizes for the Westsail 32 and I wondered if anyone has had any experience with the product? - Tom Koehl (Second Wind)

Last I heard they had disontinued the round ones. I tried to buy the mold, but they weren't interested in parting with it. They offered a 15% discount if I ordered 100 of either size, and that just wasn't enough of a discount to justify the hassle. I came up with my own version that works pretty good. There is a folder of pics within my profile if you want to see what they look like.

Stephen,  Nice clean solution and your photos explain the fabrication nicely.  Are they just a press-fit?   What gauge of plexi did you use?  -Tom

    Hi again,

I didn't use plexiglass, I used the vinyl strips they use in commercial freezers, the ones that hang vertically and the forklifts drive through.

Perhaps I'll look into making a bunch and selling them...I'll look at the costs.

They are holding up nicely, and really keep the rain out.

They can only be used if the lip of your portlight sticks out far enough to be able to put a screw clamp around them - on one of mine, it is inset to far for me to be able to put one on, luckily it is one of the aft portlights that are already under the dodger cover.

Stephen,  Screw clamp?   I'm not visualizing that detail. Can you post a photo of it?  -Tom

    Thomas,

Just like a big hose clamp that fits around the spigot part of the portlight on the exterior.  If you cannot find hose clamps big enough to wrap around the outside you can use two where each "eats the other's tail".

Stephen, I don't think I've ever seen a clamp that large, but I'll look around.   Thanks, Tom

    Hi again,

I have a couple of spares left over from an alternate method of cutting that I tried out (a friend made a rig for a table saw, but my method with a knife left a cleaner edge).

Would you like me to send you one so you can try it out?

I have three in total, if anyone else wants to try it out on an 8" round portlight, let me know.

They are working gangbusters - after a heavy downpour there's not a teaspoon of rain water in the lip. The smaller ones, closer to the deck, accumulate a bit, but it is spray bouncing up, not rain falling in.

Hose clamps are size 128 for the 8" port lights.

This one shows two smaller clamps "eating each others' tail", which worked fine.

    Tom,

I have a source on the large hose clamps.  Let me know if you want some, and the size of the ring they have to go around.
