Frank, do you have a tabernacle with a SS pin to secure the mast?

When I had the mast removed on Pygmalion the SS pin securing the mast to the tabernacle was frozen inside the aluminum tube at the base of the mast. The SS pin had to be sawn apart to remove the old mast.  Bud says that removing the now shortened SS pin requires a hydraulic press to break it free.

I think I remember another post about this problem-it might have been yours. To tell the truth, I worry that the mechanical strength of the mast step with tabernacle might not be as great as the conventional, non-tabernacle step. Bud is right, I need to take the mast down and service it, but I have just had the bottom repainted and re-caulked the deck, and I was hoping to get one more year out of her before tackling the mast. Besides, if I take the mast down, I will have to replace the radar...

The method that was used to free up the pin on my tabernacle was a series of small holes drilled into the aluminum sleeve which were used to spray penetrating oil into the sleeve and around the pin. The stays were loosened enough to allow some mast movement and the pin broke loose without damage after a few hours of patience and working the mast and pin. That was 16 years ago and when I remember, I spray a little WD 40 in the holes for preventive maintenance.

A couple of thoughts on the pin:

1.) grease zirks with time and pressure could help Drill and tap AL tube and give it a squirt every day till you see it coming out the sides?
a second option which eats the oxidation = Phosphoric acid  be careful it is an acid but could help if inserted through many drilled holes with a syringe "Be extra careful with acid under pressure!"

2.) Replace the AL tube with a stainless steel one. (important keep it a very tight fit between the ss tube and  AL mast)

    Best of luck:
