Hello, i just bought a Westsail 32 and need to re power it. I have a choice of a brand new never installed 1982 BMW D-35-2  comes with a 100 amp, alt, fresh water cooling, instument panel, fuel filter, hoses and motor mounts $3500.00 Or a used 1999 60Hp. Westerbeke w/ZF Hurth trans.250 hrs. elec. panel, and wire harness $3400.00.   Is 35 hp. enough, or would i be better off with 60 hp. Thanks, John P. Hedlund Sr.

Speaking from my own experience: Early this year repowered the with standard (Bud recomended) Betamarine 38. The 38 horsepower (very close to 35) is quite sufficient to push her through seas on the bow, with reasonable fuel consumption.

60 HP is quite a large engine for a W32, and although super powerful, I imagine would suck fuel.

What I feel you must check on however, is the availablity of reasonably priced parts and service for a 30+ year old BMW diesal engine.

Also if you can afford it I would strongly suggest the feathering 3 bladed MaxProp. Great performance in forward and reverse, and almost no water resistance whhile sailing.

If we ever have to repower it would absolutely be a Beta Marine.  Consider the price of parts and ease of repair.  We put in a 50H.P. Volvo 12 years ago and it has a real good motor. But it's a night mare to work on.  We just got a new heat exchanger and it was $1500.  We had to put a new water pump on in Feb., it was $500.

John: the history of your boat - best ask Bud Taplin  - btaplin@westsail.com - I think he is back from his latest travels!

Thanks Jay. It sure would be nice to know if my Westsail 32 has or had a name. It is in Norfolk, Va. I understand it was on the hard for many years. I really do appreciate all the help from you Westsail owners. Thank you all.  John Hedlund
