TIME FOR THE ANNUAL WESTSAIL SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA RENDEZVOUS, TO BE HELD THIS YEAR AT YACHT HAVEN MARINA, WILMINGTON, CALIFORNIA
This year’s SoCal Rendezvous will be hosted by Terry Shoup, W32 Inalla, and held at Yacht Haven Marina, 720 Peninsula Road, Wilmington CA. If you’re bringing your boat, call the marina at (310)834-6892 and let them know you’re with the Westsail Rendezvous.
Friday - The format will be essentially the same as in the past, with boats and other attendees arriving during the day on Friday. I can order some pizzas from Niko’s in San Pedro for dinner Friday night, if that meets with the group’s approval. I eat there regularly, and they have really good pizza!
Saturday morning - I’ll have some muffins and coffee available, but a good alternative is the café at the top of the dock — good food at reasonable prices. For those of you familiar with it as the California Café, its changed hands and I think it’s an improvement.
Saturday during the day - folks are free to roam the docks and visit the boats and renew old acquaintances or make new ones. Bud will be there, offering his two-beer surveys and other pithy bits of wisdom and bon mots. Feel free to bring snacks to share with other attendees. I’ll have beer and soft drinks available at my boat, W32 Inalla.
Saturday evening- I’ve arranged for us to have dinner at my yacht club, the San Pedro YC, in the next marina. It’s a short walk from Yacht Haven, and they offer dinner for about ten bucks a person, plus they have a full bar. They don’t offer a menu as such, but rather a complete dinner, with salad, main course, and desert. I don’t know what they’ll be serving that night, but I think it’s a good deal for ten bucks. I’ll need to get a solid count to them several days ahead, since they usually plan for forty or fifty dinners and we don’t want them to run short of food if we show up with a large group.
I’m still working on a speaker for the evening, with somewhat limited success. LA Port Police and USCG have speakers available Monday through Thursday during the day, which does us no good. I’ll check with the Coast Guard Auxiliary and see what they can offer. Bud can show his slide presentation of “Parts That Fail”, if you are up to it.
Kirk will be selling WOA merchandise on Saturday, so bring cash or checks — we aren’t set up for credit cards.
Be sure and let me know if you will be attending the dinner on Saturday evening, since I have to make arrangements with the Yacht Club. I’ll monitor channel 68 on VHF, or you can call my cell phone at (909) 801-1585 when you arrive at the
Directions to Yacht Haven Marina
Driving: Get to 710 from wherever you are, and then exit west on Anaheim Street. You’ll go over two large overpasses (about two miles or so) to Henry Ford, at the bottom of the second overpass. Turn south on Henry Ford, the take a right at the first light. Follow that road (it curves a couple of times) to the second stop sign. Turn right and you’ll see Yacht Haven on your left. Park in the lot on your right and walk across the street to the office. Call me (909-801-1585) or ask the office to buzz you in. At bottom of the ramp, walk to the right and follow the dock, I’m in slip seven, almost all the way at the end.
By Boat: Enter LA Harbor via Angel’s Gate, marked by the LA light on the chart. Steer to port, towards the warehouse with “Welcome” in about ten different languages and enter the Main Channel. Continue up the Main Channel, passing the battleship Iowa on your port side — can’t miss it, it’s the only battleship in the channel — and go under the Vincent Thomas Bridge. The channel angles of to the right, just keep following it. You’ll enter the East Turning Basin, a large open area. Yacht Haven is across that basin to your right. If you come to a drawbridge, you’ve gone up the Cerritos Channel, so go back and look to your right. Best bet at this point is to call me on channel 68 for final approach directions.
Remember, you don’t have to be a Westsail owner to attend. Owners of all of the Atkins/Archer/Double-ender types, and any other interested folks, are invited to enjoy the camaraderie and see our beautiful boats. Spread the word in your home ports !!
