Bottom Paint

    Has anybody used Copper Coat http://coppercoatusa.com/Home.html as a bottom paint.  They say 10+ years on there paint.  If anybody has used this paint please tell us about it.

    I have no experience with this particular brand, but even if it does last 10 years, it's a good idea to haul the boat and service the un-servicable every couple of years or so.

    Duke:  Is the approved in CA? - I wonder what the cost for the 4 coats would be on a W32?

    Very Interesting stuff. The web site has a cost calculator. Looks like about $ 1800.00 for a W32. Cost effective if it lasts ten years especially if, as it claims, it will aid in preventing osmosis as a barrier coat as well. I go by WWDD.

    I just talked with the Copper Coat Co.  Jim, the man I talked with, said this product was developed in England 22 years ago.  It has been here in the US for 3 years and just been approved in CA.  Jim said it took 2 1/2 years to get the approval for sales in CA. 

    Copper Coat was at the Annapolis Boat Show in early October and had a good showing. They sold out there stock on hand and all the inventory they just received last week.  He said they will receive more inventory about 15 November and some of that is sold but some is still for sale.

    Jim is going to send me a link to boats on the West coast using copper coat.  I will post that when I receive it.

    That's a good idea to check with other boats in your area.  I've found what might be a good bottom paint in one area might not work so well in another.

    Check with the fishermen & commercial guys.  They know what to use.  And more often than not the 'industrial brands' are cheaper too.

    I have been eyeballing the Coppercoat for about a year now...I think it's 10 kits for WS32.  I spoke to the rep at the Strictly Sail pacific, and confirmed it's legal in Cal.  I have also looked at some of the companies test plates, which also look pretty good (obviously this is going to be biased towards the company.  We will be hauling out in a couple of  months, and so far, I'm planning on Coppercoat.  I will look forward to more information.
