    When the outhaul is pulled outward the sail fabric is pulled tight along the length of the boom.  The excess fabric that's below this point hangs loose.

    I haven't had a chance to take a picture of my mainsail as requested, however I did find a photograph on-line of a similarly cut sail.  As you can see the outhaul will tighten the fabric that runs parallel to the boom - but will still be extra fabric hanging down. Thoughts?

    your sail sounds great! this is just what I had made for my boat. its only crazy armchair sailors who started the idea you should cut down a rig or undercanvas a boat for offshore sailing- power that B up and get sailing


    My last westtsail 32, Happy Times, i had the mainsail raoch probably 3" past the backstay and the foot roached well below the boom, gained nearly 25% area over the battenless original mainsail, adn a boat that pointed and went faster right down to very light conditions indeed. 

    ive also never noticed weather helm issues on any of the 4 boats including my current K32 so i'd say pile on the sails, and dont cut your boom! you can always reef if you get weather helm

    And you can always stand your rig up straighter to reduce wx helm. When we had our 32 I had the mast almost perpendicular to the waterline and not raked aft at all as earlier designs suggested. In light air I had a wee bit of lee helm and as the wind increased some wx helm but not excessive, just as it should be.  IMHO, if you always have wx helm then your mast is raked to far aft.
