Anyone ever tried barber hauling a headsail on the W32?

Frank, I was hoping someone who had more experience at it then we had would answer it, but no one has.  We have done it a couple of times to get the boat to point higher.  How much better it pointed I can't exactly say.  But it was enough to get us to clear what we needed.  What it did do is slow us down considerably. Not something we would do routinely.

That is sort of what I expected. Being in a river, being able to point higher would be helpful, seeing as how the wind usually blows straight down channel. Even going slower, it would speed things not having to tack as frequently.

I'm not very bright, I guess, but I don't have a clue what 'barber hauling' means!

Its when you pull the slack jib sheet somewhat to pull the clew of the jib closer to the middle line of the boat.

This reply is maybe a little relavent to the question.  I have not "hauled" the headsail but have on the club footed staysail.  They really loose shape beyond a close reach.  To do it, I replaced the pin in the forward shroud turnbuckle toggles with bow schackles.  The bow points forward.  A medium size 3:1 tackle system with cam cleat block attaches to the bow schackle the other block attaches to the eye on the aft underside of the boom.  That deffinatley helps shape the staysail.  Another thing kind of related is the use of the staysail instead of the jib.  Has anyone else dropped/furled the jib and used only main and staysail to go close hauled in maybe 10+ knots of wind?  If you did, what do you think?

If you fly a staysail and no jib, you will encounter lots of weather helm.  If you are in very high winds, than a staysail and deeply reefed main work well.  But in good sailing winds, the headsail is needed to properly balance the boat.

My favorite combination is the staysail and reefed main. On my boat, not only does that give me the least weather helm, but I can usually point higher.

Gerald: So if I understand your rigging - when you are off a close reach - you pull down and back on the aft end of the staysail boom?

    Jay,

Yes, when tension is put on the tackle it pulls the club/sail in and down.  The closer the club is to being over the schackle, the more it pulls down rather than in. Which gives nicer shape.  The farther outboard of being over the shackle the more it pulls in rather than down.  Not as good a shape but much better than without the "hauler".
