I'm looking for a sealed cover to keep water and weather away from instuments and ignition switch in the cockpit.  Any ideas and source appreciated.

Beta Diesel Engines sells a box with cover that fits our W32. Call Bud, I'm sure he can help you.

The beta box is not sealed and for its high price I think its pretty crappy.  Love the motor, but the box didn't meet my approval.

If you have a Yanmar panel, seaworthygoods.com has covers for some of the panels.

My panel's ignition switch came with a plastic cover that snaps on and off.  When offshore, I usually tape over that plastic cap for extra measure.  I have also used marine silicone sealant around all gauge windows and around the perimeter of the panel...for extra water tightness.  We also designed a weighted canvas cover for the overall panel. So far, so good.

I purchased an oblong bronze port from a used marine exchange store for $80. I mounted it upside down so that when it is open it hanges down out of the way. Works like a hot damn. I have a stainless steel one here for sale,

Thanks for all the replies.  I'll do some more thinking about this, and if Bud sees this thread, maybe he can chime in.  I'm not worried about keeping water (rain) out of the boat as much as keeping the meters and ignition switch dry.  Canvas cover held down with clips works but isn't the most elegant.  Meanwhile, building a fuel polisher and am rather pleased with the results.  Will post a couple of photos when finished.

Ralph:  see the slide show Westsail Cockpit and Stern  for members with several images of instrument panels - with covers in the slides.

The recessed panel covers with hinged clear lids are made by SSI and sold by Beta Marine, but SSI has a number of other sizes also.  They are not really waterproof, but do cover the key switch, and will hold off some spray. About the only really waterproof one you can use is a hinged portlight, either plastic, stainless, or bronze, and lock it down.

    Ralph,

This one is a head scratcher for sure.

With the guage cluster in the cockpit it is subject to flooding especially the ignition switch. It has happened to me twice.

With a sealed hatch over it you need to open it before using the switch and close it after the engine is running and open it again when shutting the engine down or leave it open with the chance of flooding.

With the cluster mounted inside down below it is difficult to monitor the guages when under way and you may not hear the engine alarm when it sounds. Also this means a trip below to start or stop the engine.

I am leaning towards leaving the guages in the cockpit behind a sealed panel of lexan and mounting the switch and kill button on a small bracket just inside the companionway where it can be reached easily. Of course with all new ideas there are new problems such as running the wiring so it doesnt look like a total hack did it.

                   Good luck with yours,      Lee
