A few years back we did a group buy on Cape Horn wind vanes and got something like 25% off.  In a group buy, we contact a manufacturer or supplier and offer to buy a lot of whatever their selling in exchange for a discount.  Some suppliers will cooperate, some won't.  A lot of it depends on how many folks we can get to commit, and by commit I mean put down a cash deposit.  I think it was five hundred bucks in the case of Cape Horn.  When it comes time to put down a deposit, a lot of folks bail out.

I don't recall who set it up or why we went with Cape Horn, but I'll do some research and get back to you on it.

I'm prepared to send a deposit the very day a deal is made with Cape Horn. Not interested in the Monitor.

A little incentive in case someone wants to step up to the plate: I believe Aaron Norlund arranged the last deal, and I think he got his windvane almost for free as a benefit of having done all the legwork.

We tried this a year or two ago and I heard we couldn't get enough interested people. Because I really want us to be successful this time I would suggest that rather than rely on just this website and it's users, we ask Bud if he would be willing to send a shout out to all known Westsail owners via email or snail-mail. For that matter, does it really matter if all the participants of this deal are Westsail owners? Maybe we could advertise on the various sailing forums (cruisers forum) and get enough people to negotiate an even larger discount?

If we don't make any progress this spring/summer I'm just gonna bite the bullet and pay full price.

If I remember right, when we got the deal (yep, I was lucky enough to be in on it), there were some Bristol Channel Cutters included.  Don't remember for sure how that happened.  Maybe someone else does.  Good luck.

I posted on Cruisers Forum that we were looking for people interested in joining us in a group buy. So far, after a couple of hours and 15 views, no responses and the post slips further down the que.

It being considered bad form for the original poster to bump his own thread back up to the top, maybe other interested parties could occasionally bump the thread? I'm prepared to get aggressive this time. I want to save me some money!

If it goes off the page, you can find the thread in "construction and maint section"

    Let's keep bumping it.

Good news! I hadn't intended to be the contact person for this effort, but I've had a couple of people express their desire to be included in the group buy. One of which is a new westsail 32 owner. It looks like things are moving along.

Eric, Great idea! Try posting the Cape Horn group buy in the classified section of Cruisers Forum under "Wanted to Buy" and I bet we get a lot more interest. I will definetly help keeping it updated, and help drum up support. I also am interested in putting this together ASAP. Will

Leslie received three more emails this morning from Cruisers Forum members wanting a Cape Horn. At this rate it shouldn't be more than a week or two before we have enough people.

I've also sent a message to the Tayana Owners Group asking if they'd like to become involved.

I copied and pasted this from the "ask Bud" page, but figured it should be here too.

As I mentioned earlier, we are waiting to hear from Yves. In the meantime, I've been rummaging through the archives, reading communications between the WOA members involved in the last purchase. It appears that the way the process worked is that one person compiled a list of the buyers and sent the list to Yves at Cape Horn.

Each individual buyer then sends his deposit directly to Cape Horn. Balance due upon completion of gear.

"The Great Purchase," as the last group buy has become known in folk history, was initiated in the month of May but because Yves builds the backlogged, non-discounted purchaser's gear before the discounted people's gear, the building didn't actually begin until June. The first dozen units were available for delivery in the middle of October and people began to receive them in November.

In light of the previous buyers experience with long lead times, I think we should move as quickly as possible. We will be ordering ours two months earlier and I expect the final delivery date will reflect that.
