Dave King and Duke MacGill are delivering Rhino -- Duke say's

"We are at 25.14'N  156.50'W  2048 miles to go.  First night out was rough, 25 to 30 winds with 8 ft waves. Seas from NE and we were beating as close to N as we could.  Had 2 reefs main, full staysail, and a little bit of a jib out.  Lots of water on deck.  Get use to stepping over the splash boards/back rest.  I am putting them on Amabl'e.  The cockpit itself was rather dry compared to what it could have been without them.  Day 2 and night was 16-18 winds, 1 reef main and full and full at 6+ kn. Great sailing.  Day 3 started out good but lost winds and started motor at 0830.  Did that all day till 2100 hr. Back sailing now. more later. Love you Duke"

(Thanks to Denise for forwarding his emails)

    Dave King to Ruth:

"The calm was replaced by bad weather which was replaced by more calm. The water has been all churned up causing slow motoring.  Only 101 miles made good average daily. The slowest of 20 Hawaii returns. Duke is doing well. ...Wish I was home. Doing my best. More later, Love, Dave"

Thanks to Ruth for forwarding the email.

    Duke:

19 may 1410 Last night we had about 6hr of 5kt wind but not all at one time  We would be going 6+kt and die down to nothing and then start all over  We changed the reef 3 times  one real good rain   At one point we were headed for PV Mexico and another for Viet Nam   We are in the tread winds where are they   Very frustration night   Today is not any better   Started motoring at 1340   2119hr 26 31'N  155 37'W Still motoring   Seas are flatter now than in daylight  Only good thing is we can sleep on a flat bunk but we are using up fuel   All in all I still like being out here  Duke

    Dave via Ruth:

"Thanks for the news bits. I'm completely newsless out here. (I told him about the Oklahoma tornado) Still can't sail well. Motoring again ATT (At This Time) Told Rick (boat owner) today to expect 20 more days for us. (Oyy!) Quite disappointing. I can tell by the grib files (electronic weather information) that we are approaching wind. Also the big swell from the NE indicates something from that direction. Tried Duke's new $400 drifter (light wind sail) yesterday. It was big and old. Too big to fit this boat. Nearly impossible to set with the dinghy in the way. (There is a big inflatable dinghy with hard floor perched right on the bow (front) of Rhino!)It has promise though for his boat. More later, Love, Dave

    Ruth:

    Hi,

Phew... I have 4 days off to recuperate from my 4 days of re-entry! Below is Dave's email from this morning:

"Hello, Thanks for the updates. Could be a fun weekend for you. Say Hi for me.(I'll be visiting friends & family of his) I think of all of them. Conditions are just a bit better today. The sea condition is more in tune with the wind condition instead of the extra confusion caused by a crossing wave pattern. Made good 137 miles yesterday. (Yay!) Past 1/3 about an hour ago.(Ditto yay!) That equals a 22 1/2 day pace. (Yay, yet again!) I am taking my vitamins and eating OK." (Anyone who has ever traveled with Dave on a boat is not too concerned about him eating enough!)  More later, Love Dave
    Sounds good!
    Later,

    Ruth

    Hi,

Well, a nod to two Vietnam vets out at sea this Memorial Day...and to the other vets reading this! Email from Dave this morning:

"Hello,  I'm getting there as fast as possible.  Currently 5.9k under reefed main and staysail, wing and wing. (A configuration of the sails on both sides of the boat that makes it look like the boat has wings)   There has been no sun now for 3 days. Cold and danck.(Yuck!) Will hit the 1/2 way point about 10:30am. (Yay!) Past a ship that detoured for us earlier today.(That was nice of him!)  Had a nice chat with the captain before he headed back on course for Panama. Otherwise,  more of the same.  I am not sending out many e-mails as it is just too difficult with this motion.(Understand that!)   Say hi to all.  Hope you can have a nice day at the pool.(I'll update him on the weather here) Let me know.  More later,  Love,  Dave"

So, Stan & Irene, our  friends on "Me Too" traveling up North, have radio contact with Rhino frequently, including a position report. So, that is pretty nice for Dave & Duke and us landside observers!

    Ruth

    Hi,

    Email from Dave this morning:

"Hello,  Doing 6k straight for Tatoosh ATT(At this time-GREAT!).  Still trailing an 18" long ball of heavy netting from the prop. (This bothers him a lot due to sailing performance) Transmission still stuck in forward - cannot get it out of gear.  Hope to make it to Neah Bay where I can dive on the prop again. (Better option than open ocean!) We can motor but only at about 2k. (Good for battery charging!) All in all, things are much better today with about 730 miles to Tatoosh.(Good!)  No additional new problems, but Rhino continues to get wetter inside and it is getting colder. (Not fun!) Hope all is well there.  Say hi to friends.  I am not sending out many other e-mails.  More later,  Love,  Dave"

    That's if for now!

    Hi,

I was able to get down to Saraband and listen to Dave's radio check with Stan last evening and a conversation with "Peter" on a boat also traveling to Puget Sound but much further away. I did talk with Dave a bit! I couldn't hear his position but at that time Rhino was sailing at 6.5 kts on a broad reach....and I winds were at 16. He said Rhino was 640 miles from Tatoosh. He plans to head for Neah Bay and do the work needed to get the rest of the net off and the motor and transmission functioning. Currently, without Rhino having reverse, I know there is plenty of room to anchor there without needing to maneuver into a boat slip. He plans to only stop there as long as needed to do that stuff and then back to the Strait and destination, Bellingham!

So, here is his email from this morning:

"Hello,  Good to talk to you this evening.  A treat for both Duke and I.  Yes things are much better in our situation.  Recently wind has picked up a bit and is moving toward the bow - getting a little rough again.  Definitely  getting colder too.  Miles are ticking away though.  Have a quiet weekend.  Say hi to any friends.  More later,  Love Dave"

Short and sweet...sorry, he isn't sending out more emails but I'm sure he is protecting the battery charging system!

    Have a nice weekend!

    Ruth

    Sunday 6/2/13 AM

    Hi;

Here is Dave's email from this morning:

"Hello,  Still 20k (knots) on the nose.  Pointed at Astoria instead of Tatoosh for the past 18 hours .  The best we can do at this time.  The motion makes every choir difficult.(I think he probably meant 'chore' but in some ways he is singing to the choir!) I am on knees and elbows just to tell you this.(So, appreciate the communication!)  It appears there is a High pressure cell (weather) camped near the entrance to the Straits of Juan De Fuca, challenging any sailboat to enter.  I wish I was more optimistic about the last 475 miles to Tatoosh (plus 6 to Neah Bay).  No new problems today though, although we notice that the sunbrella on the staysail is now tattered and torn along 90% of its length. (Owner will have a list of repairs to do!)  Had a nice contact with Me Too and Joshua on Sunquest this past evening on the SSB (Single Side Band radio).  It's great for us here to have the contact.(Nice!)  There is still 221 minutes on the Sat phone.  I will call, probably via cell phone, from Neah Bay.  More later,  Love Dave"

Well, they're closer than they were! I forgot to tell you guys that the day after Rhino captured its net there was a story on National Public Radio the next morning I heard while getting ready for work. It discussed the "Ghost Net" problem in the world's oceans and included an interview with a representative from an organization trying to address the problem...they also mentioned the Puget Sound area! So, it's not that unusual a happening but for this particular delivery it falls into the "what now?" category!

    Later, Ruth

    Monday 6/3/2013

    Hi,

Here is Dave's email from this morning:

"Hello,  Welcome back to work.  Hope you have a good day.  Say Hi to Jan and the rest of the gang.(He's in a pretty good mood if he is thinking about my work-Jan is a boater who works there)  Still frustrated by the wind.  Currently doing 3k but we are on course - barely.  We are keeping La Push as an option as a first stop if it can be reached easier than Neah Bay.  We are having trouble getting North.  That is the reason.  It continues to get colder.(Means he's getting close to home!)  I am wearing Connie's pajamas over my pants.(She is one of the boat owners-bet Duke didn't take a picture)  No new problems.  All else aboard is Ok.  381nm to Tatoosh Isl. (Yay!)  More later,  Love Dave"

    There you go!

    Hi,

    Dave's email from this morning:

"Hello,  Super good news from Rhino.(Phew!)   I dove on the boat again yesterday and cleared all the remaining netting from the prop.(Good Job!)  Duke, working from the deck, did a great job in coordinating the effort. (Yay, Duke!) At about 11:30am we were once again able to sail and motor at normal speeds.(Wonderful!)  I was not in the water quite as long this time but still got the shivers, which take a long time to overcome.(Yup!)  Duke celebrated by making Popcorn.(That's a great treat out there!)  All is well now and we are motoring at 5.2k in a dead calm. (Nice!)  ETA:  Past Tatoosh Isl. on Thursday am,  Bellingham on Friday.  Home on Saturday.(Sounds good!)  Transportation from Bellingham will be decided later.  More later,  Love,  Dave"

    Home stretch!
